derek-roberts-piolox-glove-box-dampener-oct-08-07Derek Roberts is a product design engineer who attended the 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop held at ACH on October 3-4, 2007. This is the first map he created following the workshop. The above meeting minutes were from a Design Review with a potential new supplier for a glove box dampener — a small part that you don’t see, but it makes the glove box open slowly and controlled when you unlatch it.

The map covered meeting attendees and the following key areas:

  • Tuning (the 6 O’Clock branch) – This told Derek how the dampener could be adjusted to suit his design
  • Prototypes (also 6 O’Clock branch) – Timing for parts delivery
  • Need (the 10 O’Clock branch) – The follow-up required from the supplier.

For the pdf version of this map go to my website. If you click on any column it will sort alphabetically and you can then search by author or map title, etc.

Hint #16 – Meeting notes are a great place to start implementing your Idea Mapping. Typically they are a “safe” environment and the information is shared at a reasonable pace. Give it a try.

playdoh-designThe tables of my workshops are cluttered with a variety of toys — from “Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head” to “Etch-A-Sketch” to “A Barrel of Monkeys”. This is part of the strategy of making learning more fun and therefore more memorable. Throughout the course, participants are encouraged to play — even steal their favorite toys from other tables.

While teaching this week at Mindjet in San Francisco, Account Manager Olivia Woodard made the most elaborate Play-Doh creation I’ve ever seen. She (with some support from colleague Anthony Roy) duplicated the design from the back of the Mindjet business card and added the logo and registered trademark symbol. I just had to share this innovative display! More photos from this workshop will follow in a future posting.

showler-7-habits-smallerOn September 16, 2007 I started a series called “Did We Read the Same Article?” Professionals attending the Idea Mapping Workshop each create a map from an overview of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Each map ends up looking quite different, and I’m sharing a series of these maps so you can see how people capture similar information in drastically (yet beautifully) different ways. The second example was posted on September 22, 2007, the third on September 26, 2007, and the fourth on October 2, 2007. This posting features a map from Certified Idea Mapping Instructor Debbie Showler from Whitby, Ontario in Canada. Her maps are filled with color, details, and imagery. Hope you enjoy her work.

Chuck Frey is conducting a survey about the fast-growing, exciting world of Web-based mind mapping tools. If you have tried any web-based visual mapping tools like MindMeister, Mindomo, Mind42 or Comapping, then please take a moment to take his survey. Chuck will be closing it on Friday, October 12th.

kaye-nightingale-idea-mapping-by-jamie-nastYou will officially meet Kaye Nightingale from the UK via October’s feature article in my column (Jamie’s Idea Spot) in the Mindjet monthly newsletter. So this is your preview. Kaye sent me the first idea map of my book (except the map I created myself when writing it) that captures all the details from my Idea Mapping Book chapter by chapter. She used MindManager and created tons of links within the map. She stopped reading the book after chapter one when she realized she wanted to make a map of the book. Her blog entry tells her full story and a second posting shares the process of mapping a book. Thanks Kaye!

You can see a clearer pdf version of this map on my website under “Additional Maps”. If you click on any column it will sort alphabetically and you can then search by author or title (An Idea Map of Jamie’s Idea Mapping Book) of the map.

You can view the Mindjet Monthly Newsletters, subscribe to the newsletter, or download a trial version of software.
