I taught a public 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop in San Francisco at the Mindjet offices in November of 2010. Participants included professionals from Mindjet, Red Bull, Blue Shield of CA, Ratheon, Sheffield Estate Planning, Wells Fargo and others. Mindjet enthusiast Michael Deutch was in attendance and had a great idea of filming a few short testimonials with his smart phone.

Until now I couldn’t figure out how to make those available, but they are now uploaded into my Flickr. Enjoy the participant feedback.

To Move or Not to Move?

This idea map was created by Vanda North who is currently the founder and director of Mind Chi Ltd. in the UK and the author of Mind Chi. Vanda has over 36 years of experience working with world business leaders. She founded The Buzan Centres and was the global director of that organization from 1988 to 2006. This idea map captures the critical issues involved in making a decision on whether or not to relocate their offices. In Vanda’s own words:

“I was aware for some time that I might need to move my offices from Bournemouth, UK to another location. At the time the decision wasn’t pressing; however if things continued as they were, it would become more necessary. After considering many points, there still wasn’t a clear-cut direction. I began to explore the issues in more detail.

There was another aspect — the feelings of the rest of the team. We brainstormed the main considerations (red) while creating an idea map. Then we used a color code for either staying (green) or moving (purple). Each team member completed a color copy of the map and gave each issue a weighting to each branch. The scale went from -100 (negative impact) to +100 (positive impact).

I collected all of the input and computed an overall score to determine a suggested direction. The end of the story was that we decide to move. It was one of the best decisions we made.”

Thank you to Vanda for sharing!

Registration is now open for the 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop that Jamie Nast (author of Idea Mapping) will be teaching in La Jolla, CA next month. Registration is required in advance. You can review the course abstract or register here. Looking forward to a great two days of fun and learning.

This is the third set of Idea Mapping examples from Dr. Tim Schweizer’s Spring 2012 students. I have been following Tim’s work since October 2009 — shortly after he attended one of my Idea Mapping Workshops. Search this blog on “Luther College” for more examples.

Tim has developed a solid process to successfully teach Idea Mapping to his students. Tim takes the first two class periods to teach this tool to his students. Their first assignment is to create a map with “Who Am I?” as the topic. I’ll share this series first before posting their other assignments.

Sure wish I’d learned Idea Mapping when I was in college. Thank you Kurt Bearinger, Nellie Nelson, Kyle Windquist, Marita May and Kendra Ledel for sharing your maps!

Australian Joe Cross went on a 60-day juicing fast across America to gain back his life. The documentary of this adventure was captured in the entertaining and inspiring movie “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead.” This Idea Map covers the 7-day prep involved in advance of a juicing fast. This is also my first attempt at using DropMind software. It was quite easy to use and surprisingly similar to MindManager.

The free 1-hour webinar I gave last week for The Werner Institute’s ADRHub is now archived and available for viewing. You need to join the free community to view.

YouTube Direkt

In my June 7, 2012 posting I shared about a recent visit I had at TechSmith — creators of Snagit, Camtasia, Jing and more. While I was there we filmed a 10-minute video hosted by Matt Pierce. He interviewed me about idea mapping and then we built an idea map together as you will see from the above YouTube video. I think you’ll enjoy it.

Matt also shared some additional information on the TechSmith Blog.

The Werner Institute, housed within the Creighton University School of Law, will host a webinar on the topic as part of its monthly webinar series on topics related to negotiation and dispute resolution; through the Institute’s free social media community ADRhub. The press release provides more details.

Register at: http://adrhubjuly2012.eventbrite.com/ if you would like to attend. The webinar will be a 1-hour event starting at 6pm EST on July 12, 2012.

The archived webinar is now available at http://goo.gl/t5Xc4.

This is the third idea map that Jim Lauria has shared on this blog. In this example Jim used Mindjet’s MindManager software to create a map of the top 10 most popular Ted talks. This version is collasped, so you can’t see all the details or the links to these talks. Featured in these clips are Ken Robinson, Jill Bolte Taylor, Pranav Mistry, Steve Jobs, David Gallo, Patti Maes, Simon Sinek, Brene Brown, Art Benjamin and Hans Rosling.

This idea map is available on the MapsForThat site. If you would like to have a copy of Jim’s original MindManager map for full details and live links just pop me an email and I’ll be happy to send it to you. Thanks for a great example Jim!

Happy 4th of July!
