denny-sikkila-7-habitsOn September 16, 2007 I started a series called “Did We Read the Same Article?” Professionals attending the Idea Mapping Workshop each create a map from an overview of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Each map ends up looking quite different, and I’m sharing a series of these maps so you can see how people capture similar information in drastically (yet beautifully) different ways. This example was created by Denny Sikkila from Mindjet — and yes, he actually drew it by hand!

nipperrunes-modeling-pilot-projectToday we are celebrating two events. First is the 1-year anniversary of the release of the Idea Mapping book and the second is the debut of a new monthly column in the Mindjet Newsletter. This posting shares the two maps featured in today’s newsletter. The above link to the newsletter will be live around 1pm EST. If you would like to subscribe to the monthly Mindjet Newsletter, click here to fill out the subscription form.

The theme of the September newsletter is “Map Your Way to Effective Communication.” Following is a brief description of the maps in my column. For the complete details see the Mindjet Newsletter. (Archives available at http://www.mindjet.com/us/company/newsletter/index.php?s=4)

  • Trees – Roberto Vidales’s (abeto008@yahoo.com.mx) original idea map in Spanish was published in the August 14, 2007 posting. He has translated it, and continues to use it to communicate to others about climatic disasters.
  • The 2nd map was created by Michelle Haines of Nipperrunes(R), and communicates her mission to help young people everywhere through the use of her company’s innovative materials. Visit www.nipperrunes.com/blog when her site launches in 2008.

You can see a clearer pdf version of these maps on my website under “Additional Maps”. If you click on any column it will sort alphabetically and you can then search by author or title (State Director’s Report) of the map.

Locus Publishing OOD in Bulgaria is the latest country to receive a Global Rights Department License from John Wiley & Sons to translate Idea Mapping.

alan-wall-7-habitsI’m starting a series of idea maps that were created by participants of my workshop titled, “Idea Mapping: A Learning Workshop”. These professionals each create a map from an overview of Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People“. Each map ends up looking quite different, has different main branches, different levels of detail, and varied amounts and types of images. In a recent workshop during the debrief of this activity, I had someone ask, “Did we read the same article?” I thought that comment was profound and that there was a lesson and a hint in its content.

The hint is that despite reading the same information or hearing the same speech or being part of the same project, each person has unique ideas and associations which make their maps one-of-a-kind. This is the first map in the “Did we read the same article?” series. The lead idea map comes from Alan Wall of ACH. Enjoy!

P.S. The Idea Mapping Squidoo Lens is ranked #7 in Business and #148 Overall today!

This blog goes out to my business associates who are not already MindManager software users or have not previously tested the MindManager Pro 7 software. If enough of you download the 21-day trial version for PC or MAC by September 30, 2007, the school of my choice will receive a free 1-year MindManager site license for all K-12 students and teachers! Please give it a try.

Hint #14 revolves around trying to capture information in your idea map when your brain is working faster than you can write or type. It is easy to forget an idea in this situation. Rather than getting frustrated about losing this brilliant thought, simply draw an empty branch where you think that idea was going to go — and move on. Keep generating ideas in other parts of the map. Often times the idea will pop back, and the empty branch challenges the brain to do just that!

P.S. The Idea Mapping Squidoo Lens is now ranked #8 in Business and #205 overall. I wonder if we can hit #1? I’ll keep you posted.

Today I landed in Murfreesboro, Tennessee — home of MTSU. Tomorrow and Friday I’ll be teaching three 3-hour Idea Mapping Workshops for the MTSU adult students and faculty for the fifth year in a row. Each session has room for 50 students and 14 faculty (fire regulations limit us). Last year we had standing room only, so we’ll see what this year brings. I’ll provide photos at a later date.

erica-ervin-french-class-2On August 20th, I first introduced Erica Ervin. I noticed an unusually high amount of traffic coming to the blog from France after that posting, so here is another one of Erica’s idea maps from when she was learning French in high school. She is now in her senior year of college majoring in French.

If anyone out there has created a map in a foreign language, I would enjoy sharing it with this blogging community.
FYI – the Idea Mapping Squidoo Lens is now ranked #13 in business and #256 overall.

A clip from Part 1 of Jamie’s BCTV interview on Michigan Entrepreneur, which aired in July, is now available to watch here. Part 2 will air twice this week. On a side note, the Idea Mapping Squidoo Lens is currently ranked #16 in business and #356 overall.
