Idea Mapping Workshop participants from my second visit to Jordan earlier this month prove to be fabulous artists with very little instruction.  The first posting about this workshop was the May 10, 2010.

The purpose of this activity is to apply a learning model to a skill most adults don’t think they can learn. This learning model is used for several different types of activities throughout the two days. Participants can then apply this model to learning other skills in their life and business. Top photo features Fares Nimri with Izzat Marji Group. The second portrait was drawn by Lamia Asmar from Zain, and the bottom two photos feature artist Ray Bechara. Thank you all for sharing.

This workshop was sponsored by Safa Hijazeen and his Forward Training team. If you want to see a fabulous 3-minute YouTube video featuring the first class in Jordan, click here and then play the video in the lower left part of the screen.

Registration is now open for the next Idea Mapping Workshop in Amman, Jordan which will be held October 10-11, 2010.  Contact Forward Training if you have any questions.

Living Beyond the Dash Series

Living Beyond the Dash - Week 1

Idea Map #237 is going to be the first part of an Idea Map that gets built over a period of four weeks. I rarely share my own Idea Maps, let alone one for more personal purposes. But I think the process I’m going to show you is equally applicable in business.

Oak Pointe Church in Novi, Michigan is doing a 4-week series titled “Living Beyond the Dash”. My intention is to build one large map that will house the teachings from all four weeks. You could equate this to building one large Idea Map over time for a class, a project, research, or for any situation where you want to capture information over time. Because my purpose is to increase my retention of the material, I will take the time to utilize imagery and color. What you see above my change over the upcoming weeks — we’ll just have to let it unfold!

If you want to correlate my map to the actual message you can download the video or audio version to your iTunes. Also for anyone that wants the original MindManager file, email me at info(at)ideamappingsuccess(dot)com and I’ll send it to you.

Canadian Amazon Ranking for Idea Mapping Book May 22, 2010

Many of you know I enjoy following statistics and rankings. Today I noticed that the Amazon ranking for the Idea Mapping book in Canada is 570! It has been fun to watch this book increase in popularity. If you have not tried Idea Mapping yet, I might suggest purchasing a copy from Amazon in Canada or the USA.

Nick Sanches - La Fleur Que Tu M'avais Jetee

Adam Bogh - Idea Map of Time Music and Money

This semester’s Idea Mapping experiment at Luther College has an exciting new twist. The April 15, 2010 posting concluded the sharing of the idea maps created by Tim Schweizer’s fall 2009 students where he had them use idea mapping to summarize a book. This time around the assignment was completely different.

Dr. Schweizer spent one 60-minute class teaching them the concepts and guidelines of Idea Mapping. They read chapters 2-5 of the Idea Mapping book, and then spent a second 60-minute class practicing and applying their new skills.

Their assignment was to create an idea map that would be relevant to them either personally, professionally, or academically. He gave them several topic suggestions and allowed for either hand drawn or computer generated maps.

Idea Maps #235 & #236 – above you will find two very different and unusual maps. The top one was created by Nick Sanches to help him memorize the aria “La Fleur Que Tu M’avais Jetee” from Carmen. The second one is from Adam Bogh. This map represents time, music, and money. Thank you both for sharing these!

Jordan Thank You Idea Map

Idea Mapping and Mind Mapping with Mervat

Today was the final day for the second Idea Mapping Workshop held in Amman, Jordan in 2010. The first one was held in February 2010. I’ll share photos over the next month or so, but I had to share two surprises from today’s event. Safa Hijazeen, Director of Forward Training and Consulting LLC presented me with a thank you card from the participants at the end of the workshop. The inside of the card was an Idea Map that they had all signed (see above). Certainly a fond memory I will keep! This becomes Idea Mapping Example #234.

The other surprise of the day happened even before class started. Mervat Salman from ETQ (who attended the February Idea Mapping Workshop in Jordan) surprised us by stopping by to say hello. Mervat shared one of her first Idea Mapping applications in the March 3, 2010 posting on this blog. Today she stayed long enough to share some of her experiences both in the workshop as well as her success in implementing her learning afterwords.

Registration is now open for the next Idea Mapping Workshop in Amman, Jordan which will be held October 10-11, 2010.  Contact Forward Training if you have any questions.

Caitlin Durnin's Idea Map - Working Knowledge

The Tipping Point

Jenna Halverson's Idea Map - The Big Switch

Jeni Arbuckle's Idea Map - The Necessary Revolution

These Idea Maps make 29 examples in this experiment (initiated by Dr. Tim Schweizer in the fall of 2009) which is following students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. The October 23, 2009 posting first introduced this series and the October 28, 2009 post puts this experiment in context. Read those postings for background or search on “Luther College” in this blog for other examples.

Today’s idea mapping examples come from four students (top to bottom): Caitlin Durnin who provided her reflections on the book Working Knowledge by Thomas Davenport and Laurence Prusak, The Tipping Point (don’t know who created this Idea Map) by Malcolm Gladwell, next Jenna Halverson shares her reflections on The Big Switch by Nicholas Carr, and lastly Jeni Arbuckle shares her reflections on The Necessary Revolution by Peter Senge, Bryan Smith, Nina Kruschwitz, and Joe Laur.

Caitlin had this to say about Idea Mapping: Idea mapping was easy for me.  I think the use of colors and images helps me remember the notes I am taking in various parts of the idea map.  I used an idea map to help me plan out a paper in a different class and it helped me prepare for the paper and know what I’m actually going to write better.  It also was nice to use an idea map for my paper because you can put the thoughts in any order and change that or add ideas in at any time and still be able to organize it when you write the paper without your map looking messed up.  With an outline if you go to change or add something in, your outline could get very messy.

Thanks to all who shared! This is the final post for Tim’s Fall 2009 students. Soon you’ll get to start seeing his 2010 student examples.
