Amazon Canada Ranking for Idea Mapping April 7, 2010

I don’t mean to spend much time on this, but yesterday I shared my fascination with statistics and book rankings. Yesterday the Idea Mapping book was ranked 1,602 at Amazon.ca and today the trend continues with a ranking of 992. Crazy! If you have not tried Idea Mapping yet, I might suggest purchasing a copy from Amazon in Canada or the USA.

Amazon Canada Ranking for Idea Mapping April 6, 2010

Statistics fascinate me. The Idea Mapping book has been out since September of 2006 and it has been interesting to watch the sales trends on Amazon. It started out rather slow because who has ever heard of Idea Mapping or Mind Mapping? Only a small segment of the population even uses it. However with the power of visual thinking and visual communication becoming more understood in the business world, and the use of mapping software products like MindManager — Idea Mapping has taken off.

Normally the life cycle of a book starts strong and then slowly fades. We are seeing just the opposite with the Idea Mapping book. Word of mouth and the demand for workshops have made the sales of this book actually increase over time. Amazon is certainly not the only measure of a book’s success, but it is at least one barometer. Of all of the countries where Amazon has a presence, the Idea Mapping book has been ranked the highest in Canada for quite some time now. I don’t know why, but just for fun I snagged today’s ranking in Canada which is 1,602. If you have not tried Idea Mapping yet, I might suggest purchasing a copy from Amazon in Canada or the USA.

Brian Sodl - Project Management Knowledge Areas

Brian Sodl attended an Idea Mapping Workshop in September of 2009. He is also PMP (Project Management Professional) certified and was able to earn 15 PDUs (under category 4) for attending. He used Idea Mapping within the MindManager product to capture details about the nine Project Management Knowledge Areas while study for this PMP exam. If you would like to have the MindManager file on this, feel free to email me at info(at)ideamappingsuccess(dot)com. Thanks for sharing Brian!

First Jordan Idea Mapping Workshop

February 14-15, 2010 marked the first Idea Mapping Workshop in the Middle East. This event was sponsored by Forward Training and Consulting LLC and held in Amman, Jordan. There were 30 participants in this first class (as you can see from this photo), and it was such a success that May 9-10 will be the second Idea Mapping Workshop in Jordan.  Registration is now open to the public and is limited to the first 42 participants.

April Scarlett Idea Map

I met April Scarlett in November of 2009 while teaching an Idea Mapping Workshop for the 11th year in a row for the Saline Leadership Institute (SLI) in Saline, Michigan. She caught onto Idea Mapping at lightening speed. This is her first example she is sharing on this blog. Below she describes her Idea Map in her own words. Thanks April!

“My Idea Map is a place where I can see and actively refer to all of the different aspects of my writing business, ASW—April Scarlett Writes.  Part of the map, my blogs for example, are already up and running so it keeps me focused as to the content for each blog and how I want to promote them.  Things not quite ready yet, like podcasting for instance, are constantly visible so I know to keep on task until they too, are operational.  This one page keeps track of my book manuscripts, my professional/commercial writing website, a list of my mentors/teachers and possibilities to brand myself in the future.  It inspires me everyday to keep on keep’in on, and stay focused for success! There will be offshoots of this maps, as projects grow larger.  I would love it if I could fill an entire office wall with my idea maps, a constant reminder of how far I’ve come.”

April Scarlett is a freelance writer. she writes features, does some reporting, writes juvenile fiction and non-fiction, and lots of business copy. You can learn more about April at aprilscarlettwrites.blogspot.com, aprilscarlettmotherboard.blogspot.com, fromherdesk.com, and successfulwomenweekly.com.

Liza

Yesterday I spoke with Liza Seiner who is one of my CIMIs (Certified Idea Mapping Instructors). She walked me through the description of an idea map she created that is an image of herself and her core beliefs and influences. It one of the most profound idea maps I’ve seen her create. I had the added benefit of the full explanation of these images! Here’s the full story and her photos of the initial and final map.

Collin Meyer - The Future of Work #2

Jack McLeod - The Future of Work #1

Katie Hasher - The High Performance Entrepreneur #2

Mark Weber - The High Performance Entrepreneur #1

Ryan Bahnemann - The Innovator's Dilemma

These Idea Maps make 25 examples in this experiment (initiated by Dr. Tim Schweizer in the fall of 2009) which is following students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. The October 23, 2009 posting first introduced this series and  and the October 28, 2009 post puts this experiment in context. Read those postings for background or search on “Luther College” in this blog for other examples.

Today’s idea mapping examples come from students Collin Meyer (top) and Jack McLeod who both provided their reflections on the book The Future of Work by Thomas W. Malone in the form of an idea map.  Idea Map #3 & #4 are from Katie Hasher and Mark Weber who provided their reflections on the book The High Performance Entrepreneur by Subroto Bagchi. The final Idea Map is from Ryan Bahnemann who provided his reflections on the book The Innovator’s Dilemma by Clayton M. Christensen.

Thanks to all who shared their examples!

Kara Schrapp - Squirrel Inc

Ryan Fett - Squirrel Inc 2

Bethany Aschim - The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing

Katie Goodroad - The Black Swan

These Idea Maps make 20 examples in this experiment (initiated by Dr. Tim Schweizer in the fall of 2009) following students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. The October 23, 2009 posting first introduced this series and  and the October 28, 2009 post puts this experiment in context. Read those postings for background or search on “Luther College” in this blog for other examples.

Today’s idea mapping examples come from students Kara Schrapp (top) and Ryan Fett who both provided their reflections on the book Squirrel Inc.: A Fable of Leadership through Storytelling by Stephen Denning in the form of an idea map. Here are Kara’s thoughts about Idea Mapping:

“Idea Mapping wasn’t a hard concept to pick up and do when I’m told to. However, it is a lot harder for me to actually practice it outside of specified homework situations. I have been taking notes one way for so long and have worked hard on perfecting that skill so that switching is difficult. Even though I can see how a mind map would be more organized because it isn’t a list of words I don’t feel like it is more organized, and when taking notes the appearance of them is oddly something that matters to me. Yet even though I don’t mind map on my own time learning the skill has helped me when I am reading material for my classes because I think of it in a way of “how would I mind map this?” which allows me to group information together and find the key points more efficiently than I have in the past even if in the end I still write out my notes on my lined paper.”

Here are Ryan’s thoughts about Idea Mapping:

“Initially I really didn’t like the whole idea of idea mapping.  The first few maps I did were really disheartening due to my lack of any artistic abilities whatsoever.  After the last few that I have done, however, I think I am getting the hang of it!  They really do work better for organizing your ideas and notes on paper, but I feel like they will take a lot of practice and application to get used to using them in your everyday life.

The next two idea maps come from students Bethany Aschim (The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and Jack Trout) and Katie Goodroad (The Black Swan by Nassim Taleb). Here are Bethany’s thoughts about Idea Mapping:

“I really like the whole idea concept of idea mapping, it’s really nice to be able to be creative while taking notes and brainstorming. It was really easy to learn with just the few chapters that we read. It really nice to organize things that I need to do during the week and take notes during a class. I also like that its easy to go back and add small things later, whereas in a regular list of notes there isn’t room to go back and put things in without it being messy.”

Here are Katie’s thoughts about Idea Mapping:

“Mind mapping was challenging for me becase my mind would move to quickly to beable to keep up wtih changing colors and knowing whether to create a different branch. I did like the freedomof being able to let my mind wonder and come up with ideas, but sometimes my mind would wonder to fast.”
