For the second year in a row I had a wonderful experience in Warsaw, Poland teaching Idea Mapping and MindManager software to some of the highest ranking leaders of Poland’s public sector. I was invited to come to Warsaw by Dr. Karol Olejniczak who is an Assistant Professor at the  University of Warsaw. He runs a program called EUROREG — an Academy of Evaluation which is financed and sponsored by Polish Ministry of Regional Development and the European Union.

Here are a few photos from the first day of class where they applied a learning model to learn to juggle, had and introduction to idea mapping and got started with MindManager. Last photo is of my favorite landmark in Warsaw as I walked back to the hotel.

right-view-palace-of-culture-and-scienceLast year I was invited to come to Warsaw, Poland in November of 2008 by Dr. Karol Olejniczak who is a professor at the  University of Warsaw. He runs a program called EUROREG — an Academy of Evaluation which is financed and sponsored by Polish Ministry of Regional Development.

2008 was the first year for this program, and each participant had to earn their spot. It ran 9 months and a group of 50 of Poland’s most brilliant civil servants met for 2 days twice a month. As part of this program I taught a 6-hour workshop on Idea Mapping, learning and the MindManager software program.

When registration opened up this year it filled in 7 hours with candidates who are some of the top-ranking leaders in their ministries. For the 2009 class I will be teaching for the entire weekend November 6-7. This new group of 30 and those from last year are dedicated governmental employees who are part of a critical effort to rebuild Poland’s infrastructure and to measure the success of those projects.

Nicholas Dinkel - Group GeniusThis Idea Map is the eighth example and the fourth posting in this year’s experiment we are following with students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. The October 23, 2008 posting first introduced this series and the October 28, 2009 post put this experiment in context. Read those postings for background.

Today’s idea mapping example comes from student Nicholas Dinkel who provided his reflections on the book Group Genius (by Keith Sawyer) in the form of an Idea Map.

jugglingshare-42010 is just around the corner, so it’s time to start planning some public Idea Mapping Workshops for next year. I had specific requests from individuals to bring this workshop to Vancouver B.C., Amman Jordon, and Phoenix, Arizona. (If there is an interest to bring this workshop to your city, contact me and I’ll see if we can get it on the schedule.) Palm Beach, Florida is a standing open course twice a year. Who wouldn’t want to attend a class there?!

Here are the dates so far for the 2-day Idea Mapping Workshops:

  • Vancouver B.C., Canada: January 19-20, 2010
  • Amman, Jordon – Stay tuned for specifics, but we’re looking at the end of January 2010. Call 1-734-207-5287 (or toll free within the USA 866-896-1024) or email me at info(at)ideamappingsuccess(dot)com if you want to be on the wait list.
  • Phoenix, Arizona: April 13-14, 2010
  • Palm Beach, Florida: April 19-20, 2010

Here are the dates for the next 5-day Idea Mapping Certification Workshop:

Hope you can join me for one of these courses!

Abby Switzer - Free Prize Inside #2

Joe Putnam - Free Prize Inside

This is the third posting and the sixth and seventh Idea Mapping examples in this year’s experiment with students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Last week’s posting first introduced this series and Wednesday’s post put this experiment in context. Read those postings for background.

Today’s idea mapping examples come from Abby Switzer (top) and Joe Putnam. Both students read the book Free Prize Inside by Seth Godin and then created an idea map of their reflections. I have no further feedback on how they are using this tool in their studies or lives, but will keep you posted if I get any of that information.

Brynne Zinnecker - Art of Innovation

This posting is the second in what is going to be a fascinating experiment this year with students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Last week’s posting first introduced this series. Now let’s put it into context.

Dr. Tim Schweizer teaches “Principles of Management”. He felt like teaching Idea Mapping to his students was such an important life and study skill that he had them read the first 5 chapters of my Idea Mapping book and then he dedicated an entire class period to practicing.

According to Tim, one of the primary learning experiment objectives was to get “good reading material” in front of them to stimulate interest (something other than a textbook). Alfie Kohn talks about this in The Myth of Homework. So the students read from interesting books (they were instructed to read for fun and wouldn’t be tested on it) for 40 minutes during an actual class period. Each student reads a different book, but since Tim has two sections of the class, you may see the same book mapped twice in this series.

After 40 minutes of reading they only had 15 minutes to map their thoughts. The instructions were that the maps were not supposed to be summaries. The maps would be reflection pieces on the reading. So the secondary learning experiment is practicing Idea Mapping.

The students randomly picked one book from the box of books pre-selected by Tim and then read. In some cases he had a post-it note telling them where in the book to start reading so they got started in an interesting spot. In other cases they started anywhere in the book.

A while after this initial exercise Tim collected responses from his students about their experience with Idea Mapping. Where we have a specific comment from the student I will include that in the post. This particular Idea Map was created by Brynne Zinnecker. There is no comment from Brynne at this time. The book she chose to read was The Art of Innovation by Tom Kelley.

Dr. Tim Schweizer is a Professor of Management at Luther College in Decorah, IA. He is also a Certified Trainer: Six Thinking Hats™, Lateral Thinking™ (Edward de Bono tools), and Former Vice President, Altshuller Institute for TRIZ Studies. One of the courses he is currently teaching is Principles of Management.  It is required for the Management major and  minor, and is usually the first “management” course students take. It is open to students at the sophomore level and above. Luther College is a liberal arts school, so his class is open to non-majors as well as majors.

This is going to be a new series where I’m going to share with you the results and reflections of these college students as they are learning to implement Idea Mapping into their life and studies. Tim was a participant in my Idea Mapping Workshop in August of 2008 and has been teaching students frequently since then.  He has also contributed several very popular Idea Mapping Examples himself to this blog. Tim purchased 20 copies of the Idea Mapping Book for the college and his students read the first 5 chapters.

This first reflection is from Thato Masire, and I’ll let him tell you his thoughts in his own words:

“During the first half of the semester, my Management Professor, Tim Schweizer taught us a skill that I could have never imagined learning in college let alone in a Management class.  Over a number of class periods Tim had us do some readings on idea mapping and also some in-class exercises.

I can sincerely say that idea/mind mapping is a skill I use regularly across many disciplines and even in my private endeavors.  Idea mapping has truly proved to be an indispensable skill to me.

From the idea mapping formula there are some things that do not work for me for various reasons. I have just decided to discard the things that don’t work for me. In my maps I don’t use color, because I feel like changing pens slows down the process of gathering ideas or scribbling down notes.  My maps do not only have one word to represent ideas or concepts, but sometimes it is a two or three word phrase so as to remember what I was making note of.

There are a number of things that work for me with idea mapping that outweigh those that do not work.  That is why I regularly use idea mapping. What works for me is that idea mapping allows the gathering of ideas quickly, varied and numerous. The fact that they are personalized makes them more meaningful to me.  Nobody besides myself has to understand, and I have the liberty to do whatever works for me as an individual.  The branches help organize related ideas or information.”

I appreciate Thato for taking the time to share his thoughts, and respect that fact that he can discern when to adapt the idea mapping guidelines to fit his purpose instead of being locked into the rules as the mind mapping laws dictate. His first idea map is for a topic that he was tested on – ” Getting To Yes” – negotiation skills. The second example is an idea map for a movie idea that he would like to implement – Thato noted that the ideas flowed easily here. Examples three and four were idea maps for topics that he was going to be examined on. Thanks Thato!

Billy Waters - The 4-Hour Workweek

Billy Waters from Ireland first contributed to this blog April 3, 2008. Today he is sharing his second idea mapping example which is a summary of the book titled “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferriss.  To see more of Billy’s examples check out his Flickr Photostream and Evernote for more book summaries and Evernote for other concepts.

This examples created using MindManager had to be folded. If you want the full expanded MindManager example, email me at info(at)ideamappingsuccess(dot)com.
