An Idea Mapping Success Blogs Weblog
In my September 19, 2008 posting, I talked about the HSMAI conference in D.C. I spoke at two weeks ago. This is a follow up to that posting on a more personal note. I went to the conference not knowing a soul. I was fortunate enough to meet some veterans of this organization who took me under their wings. Let me introduce Sue Tinnish (a bridge between people and results) and Gloria Nelson (award-winning collaborating strategic event marketing partner). They were also speakers for this conference. Attached are memorable photos. Many thanks to you both!
This past weekend celebrated the 2-year anniversary of the release of the Idea Mapping Book published by John Wiley & Sons. The publication of this book has taken me on an unexpected journey. I’ve had the privilege of teaching for many new clients around the globe, and more importantly YOU (the readers of the book and this blog) are more successful as a result.
I can’t wait to see what another year brings. Through the end of the year there are so many organizational workshops scheduled that there will be at least another 175 Idea Mappers joining the ranks of those utilizing their brain and time more effectively. Be part of this adventure today. You don’t want to miss out!
Last week I was privileged to speak at the HSMAI National Conference in Washington, D.C. This organization offers three conferences per year to meeting planners. What differentiates HSMAI is that there is no fee for attendees.
I had 90 people attending a 75-minute Idea Mapping session. The photos you see are from the Association Activity (for those of you who are familiar with that), as well as showing-off their new idea mapping skills!
I’m very excited to announce two open public Idea Mapping Workshops in India. Classes will be taught by Jamie Nast on January 12-13, 2009 in Pune (the birthplace of Certified Idea Mapping Instructor, Kaizad Irani) and January 16-17, 2009 in Jaipur. Registration is required at least 6 weeks in advance. See the course abstract and/or more registration information.
This month’s O, The Oprah Magazine features an article that says to “forget making a list, and make a mind map instead.” I couldn’t agree more!
Luciano Passuello is a regular contributor to this blog, and his specialty is using idea maps to summarize books. Today’s map features Michael Gelb’s book “How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci”. This is the folded version. The full version can be downloaded here. For more of Luciano’s book reviews, search on “Luciano” within this blog.
Liza Jennings Seiner is a CIMI (Certified Idea Mapping Instructor) that has shared several idea mapping examples since the inception of this blog — including her idea map that celebrated the life of Linda Goodremont who lost her battle with cancer. (Search on “Liza Seiner” for her other contributions.) That was Idea Map #8, and today Liza shares another one of her amazing creations.
Liza is a lawyer turned … I don’t know what title to give her. She transforms complexity into visual idea maps that consolidate, organize, and simplify information in a way that is extremely memorable. She can capture live information (meetings, conferences, brainstorming sessions, etc.) into beautiful hand drawn representations. This particular example shows her business card. Is this cool or what?!!
If you want Liza to create an idea map for any special occasion (anniversary, retirement, graduation, wedding, birthday, etc.) this would be one unique and memorable gift. With her designs you could create card designs, invitations, T-Shirts, cake toppings, resumes, career summaries — the possibilities are endless!
Get in line behind me, because I’m the first in line! I thought my business card was pretty clever (I’ll share that tomorrow), but now I’m going to add a little Seiner flair!
VizThink is hosting its first European conference in October of 2008 in Berlin. Tom Crawford (VizThink CEO) is looking for a mapper to:
– Create live mind maps for 2 of the 4 general sessions at the conference. The general sessions are 90 minutes long and there are 2 each day. It would be done on the computer. They’ll show it a couple times during the session to see how it’s developing.
– In addition, there are 2 breakout times slots each with 4-5 choices for each for a total of 16-20 breakout sessions at the conference. Of the 16-20 breakout sessions, the person would need to choose two (whichever ones they want) to attend and map. These could be on paper or on the computer, though I would again lean towards on the computer. There would be no debrief or discussion for these. They would just be used after the event on the wiki.
If anyone feels they meet these qualifications, please contact Tom Crawford at tcrawford@vizthink.com. VizThink will pay half of your entrance fee to the conference.
Steve Rothwell from the UK has previously contributed several idea maps to this blog. This is the collapsed version of a much larger map he created using MindManager. I’ll let Steve tell you about it in his own words. Email me if you want me to send you the full version.
“The attached is the outline and script for a 10 minute presentation on planning effective meetings. It started on paper and then progressed to MindManager where I developed the ideas and structure. Then I added anecdotes and tips. I don’t share this map when I present, I have committed it to memory and work from a much simpler version that is also a handout. As a bonus, I provide an additional handout — a 2-page planning worksheet. I’ve given this informal talk to a couple of local business networking groups, and it appears to be well received.”
The answer to yesterday’s brain-teaser is Rogers. Kroger is a national grocery store chain in the USA, so the solution is: Kroger (not Farmer Jack’s) minus the “K” plus an “S”. Scott Knitter from EDS was the first person to correctly guess the name and Lisa Harvey Roach (Certified Idea Mapping Instructor) was the second.
The purpose of this blog is to share idea mapping examples and related learning from my Idea Mapping, Memory, Speed Reading, and Certification Workshops. This blog is dedicated to my Certified Idea Mapping Instructors, my clients, Mind Mapping and Idea Mapping practitioners around the globe.
