Rebuilding Downtown Manhattan (2)On October 13, 2011 I blogged about one of my favorite maps created by David Hill with assistance from Lisa Frigand — both from Con Edison in New York. This map greatly assisted in rebuilding Manhattan after 9/11. The power of this map is that it shows something very complex in a way that makes it clear. You can read the full story on the October 13, 2011 posting.

Today we celebrate another milestone for this famous mind map. Earlier this month The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA) acquired David’s Rebuilding Downtown Manhattan mind map. A note from the museum said, “We all felt that the work was of such important historical interest that we should include it in the MoMA Study Collection. The Mind Map is of particular interest to us given that we hold to much material pertaining to 9/11 and the rebuilding of lower Manhattan.” The map was delivered the following week.

Congratulations to David Hill for his contribution to history!

tammy-sookthis-page1I’ve posted this before, but these are still fun idea maps for the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday.

Tammy Sookthis has participated in both the 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop and the 1-day Memory/Speed Reading Workshop offered through ACH (subsidiary of Ford). She sent me this series of idea maps which she created to get organized for her Black Friday shopping spree. The original copy has everything you see on 1 sheet of paper, but I’ll describe this series from the bottom up. She started out with a list of who she was going to buy for and what she might get them. The first map (with the colorful “Tammy”) was her initial sale “spottings” from the newspaper for each store. She mapped out everything she saw that was a good deal that she wanted to either purchase or look at. The scribbles and boxes around certain items reflected the thought process she went through, and she realized this was too much to get through in a few hours. She boxed in the things she wanted the most. The idea map at the top of this posting is the final map Tammy used on Friday after she re-grouped her plans.

Tammy – Thanks for sharing your idea mapping shopping experience! For the pdf version of these maps go to my website. If you click on any column it will sort alphabetically and you can then search by author or map title, etc.

Eric Giosa Resume Using an Idea Map or Mind MapI’ve featured a few idea maps in this blog that are resumes. The first one was Carl Giosa’s and this one is his son’s — Eric Giosa. In a competitive job market you need your resume to stand out over others vying for the same position.  I assure you that using an idea map will get someone’s attention. If you’re hesitant, I suggest a 2-sided resume with the linear resume on one side and the idea map resume on the other.

I recently connected with Jacob Share, the creator of JobMob — a creative and sometimes funny blog about job search.  He recently compiled 23 examples of idea map and mind map resumes. Maybe some of these resumes will inspire you to make your own a bit more interesting!

If you want your resume to stand out from the crowd, we at NastGroup, Inc. can provide you with this service along with continued updates. Prices start at $199. Contact us to get started.

Business Analysts from IIBA Northeast Wisconsin Chapter Learn Idea MappingOn November 16th it was my pleasure to introduce Idea Mapping to 32 members of the Northeast Wisconsin Chapter of IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis). Many thanks to Tammy Miller who brought me in to teach this session. Tammy listened to the Idea Mapping Webinar I did in May for the entire  IIBA community headquartered out of Toronto and thought it would be a great tool to introduce to their chapter members.

Now we’ll see how they are able to apply their new skills. I’ll showcase any examples as they are sent to me.

Jim Lauria is the V.P. of Marketing and Business Development for Amiad Filtration Systems. I introduced him back in April 2011 when he shared one of his Idea Maps on Futures Trends of Urban Water Treatment.

This free 30-minute webinar follows this same topic in a bit more detail and focuses on how Jim develops the maps he uses. In addition he shares how his idea maps become living documents that can be used in collaboration and branding. You can read more of Jim’s articles at huffingtonpost.com/jim-lauria.

Anna DiCecco - Who Am I Idea Idea Map

Joel Gasway - Who Am I Idea MapIf you have been a frequent visitor to this blog, you know that I have been following Dr. Tim Schweizer and his management students since October 2009 — shortly after he attended one of my Idea Mapping Workshops. I shouldn’t even call it an experiment anymore because Tim has developed a solid process to successfully teach Idea Mapping to his students. These two examples are from the new Fall 2011 class.

Tim takes the first two class periods to teach Idea Mapping to his students. During the first class period they create their first Idea Map. These examples were only their second Idea Map and were created in about 15 minutes during the second class. Both are quite impressive considering it was only their second attempt. The assignment topic to map was simply “Who am I?

Thank you Dr. Schweizer Luther College students Anna DiCecco and Joel Gasway.

Kris Mavin

West Hartland Christian Academy - Class 1This is going to be the second school I’ve followed as another inspiring teacher equips his students with the skill of  Idea Mapping. The first school was Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and was initiated by Dr. Tim Schweizer in the fall of 2009. You can see one of many postings about Luther College here. Now I’m going to follow some high school students.

Meet my dear friend Kris Mavin. My husband Kevin Nast and I have known Kris and his family for over 20 years. Kris is the Senior Pastor for a church here in Michigan called “The Cause”, but also teaches two classes at West Highland Christian Academy (WHCA) where his children attend school.

I introduced Kris to Idea Mapping many years ago and then he attended the 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop I’m guessing back some time around 2003. He knew the power and value of the tool, but didn’t really have a platform to use it like he wanted until now. The name of one of the classes Kris teaches is “Misseo Dei” (God’s Mission).  He describes it as follows:

Specifically that course is designed to invite students to enter a deeper understanding of God through joining Him on the adventure of a lifetime.  The publisher of the book used in the course adds that “This is not an experience that begins and ends with salvation, but it is a journey that lasts a lifetime.” As we had talked I wanted to include the Idea Mapping as part of the curriculum to better equip the students for recall and creativity.  My personal take on teaching Bible in an academic setting is that it becomes exactly that, another academic class.  At a college or post graduate level that is one thing, however, at a Jr. High or High School level I believe that you have to work hard at balancing your approach to instruction so as not to make it simply a grade that the student is striving for as opposed to potential life altering (if not eternal life altering) information that should have immediate application.”

So with that as the back drop Kris purchased Idea Mapping books for each student and began to teach them how to create Idea Maps. He has spent several weeks on this to really solidify their skills before tackling the curriculum. I’ll share some maps from some very creative assignments that Kris has had them do. With only a few Idea Maps under their belts you can already see their growth, successes and personal styles starting to take shape.

I had the privilege to visit their class last Thursday. We had two of the students missing, so next time I’m there I’ll get a photo with all of them. I look forward to introducing you to these 11 juniors and seniors from WHCA and sharing many of their maps throughout this school year.
