Rebuilding Downtown Manhattan (2)This is one of my absolute favorite Idea Maps or Mind Maps I’ve ever seen … a needed tool at an incredibly critical moment in time.

An avid user of MindManager David Hill of Con Edison writes:  “A few months after 9/11 I was having coffee with my friend Lisa Frigand of Con Edison’s Economic Development department. She told me that she was on a committee involved with rebuilding Downtown Manhattan and that they were having a great deal of difficulty keeping straight all the groups involved with the project. I had introduced her to Mind Mapping a few years ago (by helping her mind map a project she was doing for our company’s CEO) and we came up with the idea of creating this  map. Lisa provided the information about all the groups involved and I put the map together. I also interviewed some of the people involved to get the correct data and relationships.”

The power of this map is that it shows something very complex in a way that makes it clear. This map was instrumental in assisting Con Edison in rebuilding Manhattan. David is also a key player for the USA Memory Championships hosted by Con Edison every March.

Update: Earlier this month The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA) acquired David’s Rebuilding Downtown Manhattan mind map. A note from the museum said, “We all felt that the work was of such important historical interest that we should include it in the MoMA Study Collection. The Mind Map is of particular interest to us given that we hold to much material pertaining to 9/11 and the rebuilding of lower Manhattan.” The map was delivered the following week.

His success in teaching Idea Mapping to his students has resulted in a published research paper, a new paper titled “A Classroom Guide to Teaching Idea Mapping” and several opportunities to present his papers.

I ran across a few examples that I had not yet shared. Tim takes the first two class periods to teach them this tool. During the first class period they create their first Idea Map. These examples were their second Idea Maps and were created during the second class. We were both quite impressed considering it was only their second attempt.

The assignment topic to map was simply “Who am I?” Thank you Luther College students Emily, Ben, Theo, Alla, and William.

idea-mapping-bookI just happened to be on Amazon today and noticed that they have dropped the price of the hard cover to $14.17. Usually Amazon prices this book between $16 – $18, but occasionally it drops as it has today. Buy one today before the prices goes back up.

Last Thursday I returned to Mufreesboro, TN for the 9th year in a row to teach two Idea Mapping Workshops to adult students at MTSU. These workshops are sponsored by OWLS (an organization providing support for students who have primary responsibilities outside of the University) and by Pinnacle (MTSU’s chapter of the national Pinnacle Honor Society for non-traditional students generally over the age of 25).

The leading faculty member supporting this event each year has been Dr. Carol Ann Bailey. She saw the wisdom of providing students with a . She saw the wisdom of providing students with a tool that would help them at the beginning of the year to excel at their studies and also give them a tool for excellence in both business and life. Her leadership is responsible for impacting over 685 learners over the years. Thank you Dr. Bailey for all you have brought to the students, faculty and to me. I’m proud to call you my friend.

Janet Forton - Original Dr. Deming Portrait Used During Mind Mapping Workshop at EDSJanet Forton's Edwards Deming Portrait Drawn During 1996 Mind Mapping or Idea Mapping Workshop at EDS

This drawing was created by Janet Forton who is a friend and colleague from my old EDS (now HP) days. She took what was then called my Mind Mapping Workshop (now updated to Idea Mapping Workshop).

During on of the activities participants are challenged to apply a learning model to do what many consider to be impossible — draw a portrait of a human face. This learning model is used for several different types of activities throughout the two days. Participants can then apply this model to learning other skills in their life and business.

On the left you will see both the original portrait and then the one that Janet drew by hand with nothing but copy paper and a Number 2 pencil. Thanks Janet!

If you want to see some of Janet’s Idea Maps see Effects of Caffeine Map or the story about how we miraculously reconnected after many years or A Medical Makeover Map. If you search this blog on “portrait drawings” you will find many more examples.

Chuck Frey must be the world’s leading expert on mind mapping or idea mapping software. He has done a series of surveys and this won proves to be another winner.

As with past surveys from this blog, this year’s Trends survey yielded some surprising results:

  • Nearly half of respondents said that mind mapping software has had a “significant effect” on the way in which they work
  • Respondents cited an average productivity increase of 30% from using it.
  • Over 59% of respondents indicated they would not be able to create the same quality of work if they didn’t have this type of software.

That’s just a sampling of what’s contained in this important report, which gives an unprecedented glance into the ways in which mind mapping software is providing value to today’s worker. Be sure to check it out!

Jevita Poer - Blink

Liz Engebretson - The Tipping Point

Kirsten Stevens - Here Comes Everybody

The very first posting about this experiment with Luther College students was on October 23, 2009. (You can get some background there.) Dr. Tim Schweizer (who took my Idea Mapping workshop in August 2009) led the experiment.  Every semester since then Tim has taught Idea Mapping to his Principles of Management students at the beginning of each semester. Each student reads the first 5 chapters of my Idea Mapping book and then Tim teaches them the “how to’s.”

During one of the activities the students randomly pick one book from the box of books pre-selected by Tim and then read. After 40 minutes of reading they have 15 minutes to map their thoughts. The instructions were that the idea maps were not supposed to be summaries, but they would be reflection pieces on the reading.

So today I’m sharing three Idea Maps from students who attended the Spring 2011 semester. The first one was created by Jevita Poer on the book “Blink” by Malcolm Gladwell. The second example was done by Liz Engebretson on the book “The Tipping Point” also by Malcolm Gladwell. The final idea mapping example is shared by Kirsten Stevens on the book “Here Comes Everybody” by Clay Shirky. Thanks to all for sharing.

To see more examples from these students search this blog for “Luther College.” If you are interested in purchasing Dr. Schweizer’s recently published 15-page article describing this experiment in detail, it was published by The International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society.  The cost for the printed version is $10 and $5 for the electronic version. If you are an educator this article is a MUST.
