Confessions – A New Book by Jodie Rhodes

Confessions Front Cover - Jodie RhodesConfessions Back Cover - Jodie RhodesJodie Rhodes is my literary agent and the person to whom I give credit for getting my Idea Mapping book published by a major publisher — John Wiley & Sons. I was introduced to Jodie by my good friend Scott Hagwood who is a 4-time USA Memory Champion, the 1st Grand Master of Memory in the USA and also one of Jodie’s authors who wrote a book titled Memory Power.

Jodie’s first novel was American Beauties followed by Winners and Losers which made the LA Times bestseller list its first week in print. Her recent book Confessions was just published in the fall of 2011. I finally had a chance to read it and couldn’t put it down. This memoir is not her story about becoming a literary agent. In fact, you won’t come across that until the end of the book.  As Jodie states, “Instead, you will read the story of a person who lived a life that could only be written as a confession.” See the back cover of the book where 10 New York editors praised her work.

A unique attribute of this book (not surprising considering it is Jodie after all) is that all money generated by the sales of this memoir will be donated to The Jodie Rhodes Literary Book Awards. Winners of the award will have their books featured on both Barnes & Noble and Amazon, and distributed by Ingram and Baker & Taylor to bookstores all over the country. You will find submission guidelines in the last chapter of her book.

Jodie had a decorated track record in writing and marketing prior to be coming a literary agent unlike any other. You can read more about her professional history on her website, but this book gives you a peek into the unshared side of a woman with impeccable honesty and someone who never gives up…NEVER!

Antonio Bautista - Values and Beliefs Idea MapAlex Peterson - Football Idea MapAlec Travis Idea Map - SchoolAnna Dicecco - After Luther College Idea Map

If you have been following my postings about Dr. Tim Schweizer and his management students at Luther College, you will enjoy 4 more examples from his Fall 2011 class.  I have been following Tim’s work since October 2009 — shortly after he attended one of my Idea Mapping Workshops.

Tim has developed a solid process to successfully teach Idea Mapping to his students. Tim takes the first two class periods to teach Idea Mapping to his students.

The first idea mapping example was created by Antonio Bautista about his values and beliefs. The second example is from Alex Peterson on the topic of football. Next we have Alec Travis who shares his idea map about school. The final example is from Anna DiCecco who share a previous example in my October 31, 2011 posting. This time her topic is about her post-graduation plans.

Thank you Dr. Schweizer’s Luther College students Antonio Bautista, Alex Peterson, Alec Travis, and Anna DiCecco for sharing your idea maps.

New Year 2011 - dreamstime_14743332The number of unique Idea Mapping website and blog visitors from 133 countries, page views and referrers increased again in 2011. The statistics you see are a combination of those from this blog as well as from the Idea Mapping Website. The current WordPress platform used for these sites doesn’t allow for separating the two. Hopefully upgrading to the newer version will allow for the distinction in 2012.

2011 Statistics

  • Total Unique Visits – 837,490 Up 13.5% over 2010
  • Total Page Views – 2,680,444 Up 18.6% over 2010
  • Total Referrers – 51,945 Up 21.8 % over 2010

I’m so glad that the Idea Mapping Blog and Idea Mapping Website continue to provide content that draws more readers each year. Have a great 2012!

The 2012 schedule for Idea Mapping Workshops is now available. Unless noted otherwise, Jamie Nast (author of Idea Mapping) will be teaching the workshops. Currently the public workshops are scheduled to be available in:

  • Palm Beach, FL
  • Livonia, MI
  • San Francisco, CA
  • Columbia, SC
  • Las Vegas, NV

There is also going to be at least one more public course taught in Livonia, Michigan but the date is TBD. If your city of choice is not one of these, don’t hesitate to request that it be added to the schedule.

Jennifer Weaver - Christmas Card Idea MapJennifer Weaver is a member of the 2011 – 2012 Saline Leadership Institute (SLI) class where I teach an Idea Mapping session every year since its inception in 1998.  I recently had an email from her where she shared this Idea Map.

She said, “I have found multiple opportunities to put some of the skills you taught us to work for me and with my kids, and the latest use was in our family Christmas letter.  I thought you might enjoy seeing a copy.  Not sure if it follows your technique exactly, but it seemed like a fun way to provide our family and friends with an update without boring them to tears with a ton of text!”

Many thanks to Jennifer for sharing this.

Vanda and Helen North gave me this dog a number of years ago and it is one of our favorite things to pull out at Christmas time to brighten up the house along with all the other decorations.  Enjoy the video!

On October 17, 2011 I first introduced Kris Mavin who is the Senior Pastor for a church here in Michigan called “The Cause”, but also teaches two classes at West Highland Christian Academy (WHCA) where his children attend school. The name of one of the classes Kris teaches is “Misseo Dei” (God’s Mission). You can read more about that in the previous posting.

Kris has 11 students in this class — 7 high school juniors and 4 seniors. He took the first several weeks at the beginning of the school year to provide them with some in-depth teaching on using idea mapping for their studies. Now they are applying idea mapping to the curriculum. Idea Mapping will be a valuable skill for these students for both school, work, and life.

The idea maps I’m sharing with you today are from their very first assignment from Kris which was to simply do a map of the Bible. Some of the students don’t have their names on their maps, but future assignments will contain all their names. Many thanks to the students at WHCA. You may also view these idea maps in this cool Animoto picture/video slideshow.

Vanda North - Planning Thanksgiving Dinner

During my recent visit to Palm Beach to visit Vanda North (author of Mind Chi), I noticed this idea map on her refrigerator. It was her plans for preparing Thanksgiving dinner. I snapped a photo and thought the readers of this blog would be interested as we still have the Christmas and New Years celebrations ahead of us. She used a series of codes in this idea map and they were V with a smiley face for Vanda’s task, G for Gloria’s task, P for Princess’s task (AKA Jeannie) and a red dot for last minute items. A great way to capture all action items in a single view!

Vanda, Larisa & Jamie - Dec 2011Last week I had the joy of visiting Vanda North — my dear friend and the author of Mind Chi. We had a full three days of pure fun without the normal distraction of teaching workshops. Although we both love to teach it was a rare twist that we both thoroughly enjoyed. On one of the nights our dear friend and Certified Idea Mapping Instructor Larisa Brigevich joined us for dinner. Many thanks to her mom for making some special Russian breads stuffed with cabbage, rice, salmon and who knows what else. They were delicious!!

Video Camera - dreamstimefree_4335285Today my dear friend Vanda North introduced me to an application called Animoto. It allows you to create a video or picture slideshow in a variety of styles with music and text. I tried the free version for my first attempt and think you will enjoy watching it here. No need to sign up for an account to view, but you might just get hooked yourself!
