An Idea Mapping Success Blogs Weblog
Idea Mapping: How to Access Your Hidden Brain Power, Learn Faster, Remember More, and Achieve Success in Business was published in September 2006 by John Wiley & Sons and written by me, Jamie Nast.
Since the initial publication it has been translated into Serbian, Bulgarian, Japanese, Russian and Korean. It is available in the Kindle version in English and Russian. We are currently looking into a possible Portuguese translation.
Over the last 4 years my 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop has been widely accepted in many new parts of the world including Abu Dhabi, Canada, Jordan and Poland. Although I’ve been teaching this workshop since 1992 new clients have continued to have a strong demand for the content of this workshop. Some of those clients include:

Wojtek Korsak is the owner and founder of Explorer-Consulting in Warsaw, Poland. We met face-to-face for the first time in November 2010 when he and his wife took the time to meet while I was teaching an Idea Mapping Workshop for EUROREG in Warsaw. Wojtek is a MindManager expert and consultant with a passion to bring greater productivity and efficiency to organizations.
On December 30, 2010 he created an idea map using MindManager that was a picture map of some major sites around Warsaw, Poland decorated in Christmas lights. I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to share it. The jpeg here is probably not as easy to view as the one Wojtek posted on his Facebook page.
This standard activity in my Idea Mapping Workshops takes a different twist during my annual workshop in Poland. Normally each participant reads an article summarizing Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and then draws an idea map showing the key ideas from the document. The purpose of this activity is two-fold:
1. To practice taking concepts/phrases and boiling them into key words.
2. To show how different each participants’ maps can be on the same topic.
Because the Poland workshops have a strong focus on learning Mindjet’s MindManager, I have them create this map in the software rather than drawing it by hand. Above are two examples from this class.
To see hand drawn examples from other workshops search on, “Did We Read the Same Article?” or the most recent post on this topic is here.
Mindjet’s Chief Evangelist Michael Deutch was drawing idea maps during a David Allen GTD seminar (author of Getting Things Done) he attended last week. Michael’s projects and priorities are captured in this visual representation. Thanks for sharing Michael!
Decorating a laptop with Play-Doh art? I have never seen this in nearly 19 years of teaching my Idea Mapping Workshops.
Those of you who have experienced my 2-day class know that toys are a major part of the fun involved with the learning. While I was teaching a few weeks ago in Poland for program called EUROREG — an Academy of Evaluation which is financed and sponsored by Polish Ministry of Regional Development and the European Union, I saw some new Play-Doh creations made by these highly creative professionals! (You can see the Nov 29, 2010 post or the Dec 9, 2010 post for more background info on this event.)
I’ve seen lots of things made out of Play-Doh during workshops — but never like this! Maybe this is a new business idea?
This is the third year in a row that I was invited to come to Warsaw by Dr. Karol Olejniczak who is an Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw. He runs a program called EUROREG — an Academy of Evaluation which is financed and sponsored by Polish Ministry of Regional Development and the European Union. The Idea Mapping Workshop and MindManager training is the kick-off event for this program which will run into June of 2011.
The first and last photos were taken during a group activity. The second photo features participants practicing their juggling skills (click here to learn the purpose of this activity), and the third photo is of one of the participants showing off his colleague’s Play-Doh creations. The first set of photos from this event can be found in the November 29, 2010 posting.
I have had the privilege to teach an annual Idea Mapping Workshop for the Saline Leadership Institute (SLI) for 13 years now. Regardless of the industry these leaders come from, the Idea Mapping tool continues to help leaders return to their businesses and lives more productive, more creative and more organized.
One of the challenges for leaders at every level of the organization is how they can get their arms around an overwhelming amount of information, make sense out of it, and then take the appropriate actions. Professionals are often immobilized at the thought of tackling major tasks. An idea map can become an image that houses all the necessary data on one piece of paper. This enables the brain to see connections between ideas that would not be apparent in a linear document.
Top top photo shows the entire class and the rest show participants sharing their Idea Maps with each other.
Saline Leadership Institute was founded in 1998 in Saline, Michigan by Gretchen Driskell, Bill Lavery and Dan Stotz, … read more about SLI.

Dr. Olejniczak’s boss Gregory is a very fun character and we have a tradition. Each year I bring a new toy for him to model. The first photo is from 2009 and the second from last Friday. Next photo shows one of 6 groups sharing their idea maps. The fourth photo displays some creative Play-doh creations, and the last photo captures a major juggling breakthrough on film!
Thanks to everyone for a wonderful workshop! More photos to come.
Tomorrow celebrates the third year in a row for teaching Idea Mapping to the elite participants of the EUROREG program in Warsaw, Poland.
I will have a wonderful experience in Warsaw teaching Idea Mapping and MindManager software to some of the highest ranking leaders of Poland’s public sector. I was invited to come to Warsaw by Dr. Karol Olejniczak who is an Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw. He runs a program called EUROREG — an Academy of Evaluation which is financed and sponsored by Polish Ministry of Regional Development and the European Union.
Upon arrival I had a special visit with MindManager Expert Wojtec Korsak and his wife Ania.
I occasionally share some personal information and this is one of those times. Today my husband Kevin and I experienced one of our greatest successes by celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary.
We had an awesome day going out to breakfast, strolling through Northville Michigan’s Christmas Market, watching a movie, taking a dip in our neighbor’s hot tub (thanks Scott & Donna), a gourmet dinner and just chilling. Can’t wait to see what the next 20 years will bring. I’m blessed to have such a great husband!
