working-together-5Part 1 of this series was posted two days ago. So far no one has had the courage to guess the names of the participants from the name tents, so I won’t reveal the answers just yet!

The first photo shows Mark Pfaffinger who is the leader who first brought Idea Mapping to this organization in June of 2008. He’s created a monster. Following are a couple of photos of participants testing their juggling skills prior to using a learning model to teach them the new skill. The remaining photos are of the 5 teams enjoying working together in this fun learning environment. More on their actual accomplishments in the next posting.

name-tent-7In June of 2008 I paid my first visit to Larimer County Government in Fort Collins, CO. There were 24 people in the 2-day workshop. I’ve posted photos, successes, and examples from that workshop previously if you want to search on “Larimer County”.

February 2009 the top leadership went through the 2-day workshop followed by a third day of advanced learning and leadership. On that third day the 24 from the 2008 class were invited to join us. More on that in a different post. There is so much to share about the success of the individuals from these three days that it will take several days. Today is just a fun introduction of some of the participants. If you’ve been to this blog before you know that above are the names of seven participants for you to have some fun guessing their names.

For the purpose behind this activity see this previous posting. For more name tent guessing click here or to find many others just search on “name tent” in this blog.

Larisa Brigevich (Certified Idea Mapping Instructor and Director of the Global Research Library at Franklin Templton) has posted an excellent article on remote collaboration. Read the full story.

beach

We are now taking enrollments for the May 18-19, 2009 Idea Mapping Workshop which is open to the public. In addition to the exciting learning experience, the venue is two short blocks from the beach, across from the grocery store, and surrounded by restaurants. Each guest room is equipped with a kitchenette and studios are reasonably priced at $65 per night plus tax.

Participants will receive an unusual treat with this particular course. Vanda North (founder & former CEO of the Buzan Centres) will be in town, and a number of previously certified instructors including Larisa Brigevich (Director of the Global Library at Franklin Templeton), Kaizad Irani (Director of Landscape Architecture Department at Parkland College), Dave Gunby, Joe Kovach, Paul Williams, and maybe others. The last special guest is Michael Deutch from Mindjet! It’s shaping up to be quite a cast of characters.

Registration is required in advance. Join the fun!

idea-mapping-book-russian-translation

idea-mapping-book-in-japanese-2A few weeks ago I received a package from Wiley (my book publisher). When I opened it there were 6 copies of the Japanese translation of the book, and 6 of another translation that I couldn’t read. I started going through the translations that I was aware of Bulgarian, Serbian, Korean — no it couldn’t be any of those. Unbeknownst to me it had been translated into Russian and it came out in August of 2008. What a surprise!

It’s so fun to see how the different publishers approach the translation. These are the only two translations I currently have copies of in addition to the original. The Russian publisher (EKSMO) went into detail and translated everything — even the hand-drawn maps. The Japanese publisher translated the maps involving any instruction in the first 4 chapters and each chapter summary. In the front part of the book they did a beautiful job adding large color versions of all the examples from 21 professionals around the globe. the cover is really cool too! Go to Amazon to purchase your copy of Idea Mapping in English or to Amazon.jp for the Japanese version. Thanks to Alexander for providing the link to purchase the Russian translation in the comments of this post.

mindjet-webinar-january-22-2009-overview-michael-versionThis is Idea Map #145. This map was used to guide me through a recent Mindjet Webinar (January 22, 2009) with Lisa Fait and Michael Deutch (both from Mindjet). During this webinar the following items were discussed:

  • Definition of Idea Mapping
  • Origins of Idea Mapping
  • Hand-drawn vs. software-generated maps
  • Who uses Idea Mapping?
  • Why does it work?
  • Benefits of Idea Mapping
  • Demonstration of how to plan a meeting, facilitate, and follow-up after the fact
  • A variety of Idea Maps created by mappers around the globe

You can listen (and see) the recorded version of this webinar. Today the February Mindjet Newsletter will be released. Go to Amazon to buy a copy of the Idea Mapping book.

On January 13, 2009 I linked to a post that Larisa Brigevich shared regarding quantifying the value and impact of a service organization. She talked about how marketing is a combination of art and science. Larisa is the Director of the Global Research Library at Franklin Templeton and a Certified Idea Mapping Instructor.

Today’s post links to Part 2 of Larisa’s continued thoughts on measuring the impact of Franklin Templeton’s professional  library and information service on investment research and portfolio groups in their organization through the library usage statistics. This kind of marketing is critical to any business and industry during these difficult economic times.

She created these two idea maps (using MindManager) to conceptualize the key strategic areas where the library has an impact. Check out her blog for the full story that can transfer to your business as well.

Last week I taught two workshops at MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) for the 7th year in a row. Dr. Carol Ann Baily is the Director of the Adult Services Center and is the sponsor for these workshops.

As part of my reference materials I brought with me the best book I’ve read in the last year. It was Daniel Pink’s “A Whole New Mind“. Since Dr. Baily has been through this workshop many times, she spent some of the workshop looking through Pink’s book that I have highlighted in other postings. She started out taking some linear notes and then said, “What am I doing?” She immediately switched to drawing an idea map.

The photo of the linear notes represents the first few pages of chapter one. The map (which took her under an hour to create) represents an overview of the entire book. Pretty impressive!

The first one was the most difficult. The picture is a raw piece of meat + N, so rawn becomes the name Ron. The others were Mark and Maggie and weren’t as tough.

Every six months or so I feature a name tent that my workshop participants create for their introductions.

Today I decided to have a triple play for you to guess.  These are from two workshops I taught at Boeing last fall in Seattle. Photos are courtesy of Dave Ringer who directs the classes taught through the Ed Wells program for Boeing employees. Can you guess the three name? I’ll share the answers in the next posting.
