glenn-stennes-client-training-needsThis Idea Map was created by Glenn Stennes during a brainstorming session to identify 2007 training needs of companies supported by an international donor funded assistance program. The initial map was created in real-time while projected on a screen for all participants to see. Imagery was added during pauses which helped stimulate the flow of ideas. Following the meeting, some additional formatting was done. The map was then exported to a pdf and sent to all participants. The information recorded on the map formed the basis for developing the project training plan. You can see a clearer pdf version of this map on my website. If you click on any column it will sort the maps alphabetically and you can then search by author or title, etc.

Glenn Stennes is a Business Consultant presently living and working in South East Europe and a MindManager user since 2004. Last April he attended the 2-day Idea Mapping workshop in the UK taught by Vanda North. Glenn shared that applying the fundamentals taught during the workshop while using MindManager has helped make a good tool a great tool!

Portrait Drawing #4

11 Jan 2008 In: Idea Mapping Workshops, Portrait Drawings

paul-chuckran-ach-portraitThis portrait drawing was done by Paul Chuckran during one of my organizational Idea Mapping Workshops at ACH. You can read more about this activity and see other drawings by searching on “Portrait” in this blog. Thanks Paul!

The purpose of this activity is to put adults into learning situations they think impossible. Then they apply a learning model and some brief instructions in order to accomplish tasks they didn’t think they could do. This provides not only a new skill, but a model that can be applied to learning other things in business and life. Click here to learn how you can bring this workshop to your organization.

larisa-brigevich-idea-mapLarisa Brigevich is the Director of the Global Research Library for Franklin Templeton. We met 3 years ago when I did an abbreviated workshop for their organization. We re-connected in December of 2007 when she attended the full 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop. A week after the class, she sent me this idea map. I’ll let her describe it in her own words. Thanks Larisa!

“A few months ago, we established a standard process for assessing and capturing clients’ information needs. This includes conducting interviews with individual clients to determine their information seeking behavior, sources they use, information gaps, how the library can help, etc. We capture this information in Client Profiles, the two standardized templates that we use for initial interviews and when developing a specific service (hence two templates). We store them in the database and update them when new information is available.

We have a project leader, a librarian in Mumbai, who oversees this process and makes sure that all parts of the process work smoothly and that librarians follow the guidelines. He is relatively new to the process. We also just hired a manager for the team in Mumbai. I believe that teaching is the best way to learn and internalize new knowledge; therefore, I asked the project leader to train the manager. I was an observer and a back-up person in case the project leader missed something. I wanted to evaluate a project leader’s understanding of the process and identify and point out any gaps in his knowledge and in the process itself.

Idea Mapping allowed me to quickly identify gaps. We immediately talked about it and determined the action plan for improving the process as well as a training plan for future trainings.”

alberto-martinez-auto-checking-for-business-managersSeveral days ago I was introduced to a new website and two new mind mapping fans. First, I want you to meet Alexander Uslontsev. He is the designer behind Mappio.com — a mind map library that lets you share and browse maps in MindManager, FreeMind, and jpg formats. To celebrate the launch of this site Alexander is running a sweepstake (ends Jan 12, 2008) where each upload or blog post is an entry to this contest. The winner gets an iPod or a Cow for an African Village. See Details.

Alexander’s main goals for Mappio include:

  • build the largest online library of mind maps
  • give newcomers a starting point
  • see what a good mind map looks like
  • provide mind mapping professionals with a place to publish and share their ideas

The same day I got an email with a question from Alberto Martinez from Spain. To make a long story short, Alberto mentioned that he had uploaded some of his mind maps onto Mappio. The map featured in this blog (and also on Mappio) is one he’s titled “Auto-Checking For Business Managers”. Whether he is facing a re-engineering process or rethinking various issues, Alberto uses this map to help him recheck his work from various perspectives in order to determine if things are going well.

For the pdf version of this map go to my website. If you click on any column it will sort alphabetically and you can then search by author or map title, etc.

Thank you Alexander and Alberto!

Winding Down 2007

30 Dec 2007 In: Messages from Jamie

rudolphAs I watch 2007 come to a close, it causes me reflect upon the year. Thank you to everyone who contributed their idea maps to this blog. Visitors learned something from each map or hint you provided.

My plan for January 1, 2008 is to provide you with a summary of the year which will include the most frequently visited postings, as well as the idea maps that had the most amount of traffic on the Squidoo Lens.

If this blog has been beneficial to you in any way this year, I would love to hear from you. Or if there is a way to make it better — I’m all ears.

P.S. This large (about 4 feet x 4 feet) balloon creation of Rudolph was delivered to me at the end of November, and made by Michael Webb who owns a company called Balloons With Heart. Michael is the husband of Jennifer Webb who has had one of the most popular idea maps this year. I’m sure you’ll see her in our top list on January 1st!

luciano-passuello-the-now-habit-folded

luciano-passuello-the-now-habit-fullThe Now Habit is a book written by Neil Fiore. These idea maps of Fiore’s book were created by Luciano Passuello from Brazil (his blog is in English) using MindManager. The top map is the folded version, and the bottom map includes all the details. To see his idea map of the book One Small Step Can Change Your Life see the December 11, 2007 posting, and for the book Never Eat Alone see the November 19, 2007 posting.

For the pdf version of the folded map go to my website. If you click on any column it will sort alphabetically and you can then search by author or map title, etc.

vizthink-logoJanuary 27-29, 2008 I will be a facilitator at a new conference in San Francisco called VizThink. In one of the sessions, I will be co-facilitating with Susi Watson, the Creative Director of For Balance, LLC. Yesterday we did a 30-minute podcast with Tom Crawford (VizThink CEO) that is now available for you to hear.

If you are attending VizThink, make sure you put the “Mapping a Great 2008” session on your agenda for January 29th from 11:00am – 12:30pm. You will get a crash course in Idea Mapping and see Mindjet’s MindManager software in action as Susi captures participants’ ideas live!

Portrait Drawing

17 Dec 2007 In: Idea Mapping Workshops, Portrait Drawings

dinesh-vora-portrait-drawingThis portrait drawing was created by Dinesh Vora during my recent 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop at ACH. The purpose of this activity is to put adults into learning situations they think impossible. Then they apply a learning model and some brief instructions in order to accomplish tasks they didn’t think they could do. This provides not only a new skill, but a model that can be applied to learning other things in business and life. Thanks Dinesh!

ji-hong-kk_leanThis idea map was created by Ji Hong, who is a Certified Master Black Belt and expert in the Six Sigma /Lean area, a Senior Consultant, and Senior Engineer in China. He was previously the Six Sigma Director for ASIMCO (a US automotive parts manufacturer with 18 factories in the US and China) and is now running his own company.

I met Ji Hong at little over a year ago through a neighbor who was a VP at ASIMCO. For years this neighbor kept asking me about my profession. On one of his many trips to China, he read my Idea Mapping book. A few days later he was in a meeting. It was Ji Hong’s turn to present information regarding their Six Sigma initiative — and he started out by presenting a map created in Mindjet software. My neighbor nearly fell off his chair. Without belaboring the story further, Ji Hong and I have been touch ever since. This unlikely meeting is documented in the November 23, 2006 posting. His wife even contributed a map for the November 7, 2007 posting.

In August 2007, Ji Hong was hired by KK – a semiconductor company in China — to conduct a lean manufacturing project. Since this company had no background on Lean, he had to design an entire plan for them. To do this he created a map which shows the order of lean activities, Lean Orginazation–Lean Introduction–Implement Plan–Training and Consulting–Improvement Result. In the main branch of “Training” he linked training materials and application worksheets to make it easy to open or close the files while conducting the training or the consulting. Ji Hong says that this lean project is running very well and will be finished in January or February of 2008 – and of course Idea Mapping gave him a big advantage. If you want to contact Ji Hong, he can be reached at +8613013788481 or jihong2008mail@gmail.com. I want to thank Ji Hong for his excellent contribution.

For the pdf version of this map go to my website. If you click on any column it will sort alphabetically and you can then search by author or map title, etc.

See Ji Hong’s map of the Six Sigma Implementation he did at ASIMCO and many others. Hit “Show All Records” and scroll down to “Six Sigma Implementation“.

Today this map is featured in my contribution to the Mindjet Newsletter. If you would like to subscribe to the Mindjet Monthly Newsletter click here.
