An Idea Mapping Success Blogs Weblog
I’ve been teaching my 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop in Poland for the past 5 years through the University of Warsaw. I am the kick-off presenter of a 9-month program for business leaders from the various ministries in Poland. My high spot for 2012 was teaching for an additional new program in Warsaw called Learning Ministries. While I was there in October my client got married to a gal that grew up in Ft. Wayne, IN — the same home town I grew up in. It was an amazing experience.
I have several goals for 2013. I have a new client (Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana) that I’ll be teaching 2 workshops for in March and I have been asked to teach a 3-day workshop for ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company). ADNOC has 15 subsidiary companies working in the various fields of the oil, gas, and petrochemical industry as well as crude oil and gas transport and services. I’ve taught for one of these 15 (Takreer), but now to teach for the entire conglomerate is huge! Can’t wait for the challenge.
The other big task for 2013 is going to be writing a revision of my Idea Mapping book. Look for new and exciting material and idea maps in the new edition.
I’ve been following Melinda Dang since my first posting about her in the fall of 2008 when she was a junior in high school. Since then Melinda has contributed numerous idea maps to this blog on topics like using Idea Maps to study for AP Physics, Spanish, studying for the SAT’s and other subjects. She is now at Bellevue College near Seattle, WA.
She has made a plan for idea mapping throughout this 2013 quarter to help her study and organize her homework. Get ready to see the results of Melinda’s new plan!
Melinda says, “So I’ve found that this app called “Jotter” lets me draw mind maps on my iPad with my stylus relatively easily and quickly because the features are minimal but they work to the point where I can get what I want. The only downside is the color spectrum is limited (but it’s enough unless you want 20+ colors) and it won’t convert to PDF for easy sharing. SO! I have a separate app called “To PDF” that converts the saved maps in my camera roll to PDF which can be linked to my drop box or opened in other apps etc.
As for my paper notes, I’ll scan them daily and if necessary create a mind map summary. But if not, I’ll merge all the pdf’s weekly so I have weekly reviews before the finals! Hopefully this saves time and makes me remember things better!
This is the 6th set of Idea Mapping examples from Dr. Tim Schweizer’s Spring 2012 students. I have been following Tim’s work since October 2009 — shortly after he attended one of my Idea Mapping Workshops. Search this blog on “Luther College” for more examples.
Tim has developed a solid process to successfully teach Idea Mapping to his students. Tim takes the first two class periods to teach this tool to his students. Their first assignment is to create a map with “Who Am I?” as the topic. You can see many of those examples on this blog. Their second assignment is a take home assignment to create an idea map on their topic of choice. These examples are from this second assignment. More of these here.
Sure wish I’d learned Idea Mapping when I was in college. Thank you Jackson Stalberger, Jarid Groth, Jared Bourquin and Jordyn Dudek for sharing your maps!
As 2013 approaches I have been getting questions about when and where the next public Idea Mapping workshops will be held. So here are the courses that have been scheduled so far:
All workshops will be taught by Jamie Nast – author of Idea Mapping. If you want to review the course abstract or register for one of these events go to http://www.ideamappingsuccess.com/courses.cfm.
This is Jim Lauria’s 4th contribution to this blog. Thanks to an excellent article by Brad Miller on content creation for thought leadership, Jim created a map illustrating how mind mapping can be used for each of Brad’s ten ideas with links to content that was created using mapping tools.
The branches in this map are collapsed in order to view. Email me if you would like the full Mindjet version of this Idea Map. Thanks for sharing Jim!
Ministerstwa Uczące Się or MUS is the name of a new project in Poland that translates in English to Learning Ministries. 16 leaders within various ministries in Poland were hand-selected to become change agents within their organizations. The 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop was their first training session together and kicked-off their learning on Oct 29-30, 2012. Joining them were the MUS team members led by Dr. Karol Olejniczak.
During these two days there is a heavy emphasis on teaching Mindjet (a mind mapping and idea mapping software program) to these leaders. The intention is that this tool will be used both in future trainings, but it will also become a standard tool that will help individuals and organizations to be more productive, organized, creative, strategic and in general to be able to visually gather around large amounts of complex data in one viewable space or single piece of paper. Once ideas/data is in an idea map electronically it can be shared in its entirety or just a high-level view depending on the audience.
One of the activities I created was intended to help them practice developing large idea maps as a team. I had each person create an individual map of a 2-page overview of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and then in groups of 3 or 4 they merged their individual maps into one. Here are the second two of those examples. If you would like the original MindManager files, just email me and I will send them to you:) The first two examples can be seen on my Nov. 19, 2012 posting.
This is the fifth year in a row that I was invited to come to Warsaw by Dr. Karol Olejniczak who is an Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw. He runs a program called EUROREG — an Academy of Evaluation which is financed and sponsored by Polish Ministry of Regional Development and the European Union.
I am the first presenter each year for this 9-month program where participants meet every other Fri/Sat for a total of 11 hours per weekend. You can see photos and read more about previous years in my 2010 post, 2009 post and 2008 post.
Thanks to everyone for a wonderful workshop!
Due to the popularity and success of the Idea Mapping book, I am now responding to a request from my publisher (John Wiley & Sons) for a proposal to revise the original Idea Mapping book. I’ve now had over 6 years since publication, thousands of readers, many new clients and enthusiasts and an even stronger network of mappers. I have lots of ideas for new material and portions of the book that could be dropped without harm, but it’s more important that I hear from you.
If you have already read Idea Mapping, what would you like to see added, changed or dropped from the current version? If you are new to Idea Mapping or Mind Mapping tools, what is it that you would like to read about/learn?
Please share any input as I embark on another journey for this revised version.
This is the fifth set of Idea Mapping examples from Dr. Tim Schweizer’s Spring 2012 students. I have been following Tim’s work since October 2009 — shortly after he attended one of my Idea Mapping Workshops. Search this blog on “Luther College” for more examples.
