Orbiting the Giant Hairball MM - Smaller

Vision - Getting Started - Color Version (2)People attending my Idea Mapping Workshop often ask me what the difference is between an Idea Map and a Mind Map, so today I thought I would show you a few of the differences. Mind Maps are governed by a strict set of laws as defined by the trademark and other published materials. An Idea Map throws out the laws giving freedom to the creator to make their application most valuable to them.

For example Mind Map laws state that you can’t have more than 7-9 branches per map, only a single word per branch, and all words or images must be on a line or branch. Shown to the left are two Idea Maps from my Idea Mapping Book. (You can find the pdf versions and other Idea Mapping examples at the Idea Mapping Success website.) The top Idea Map is a book summary of “Orbiting the Giant Hairball” by Gordon MacKenzie created by Megan Clark. (BTW – Excellent book on creativity written by a past V.P of Hallmark.) She has more than 10 main branches, has floating images and topics and has more than a single word on many branches.

The bottom Idea Map follows more of the traditional Mind Map laws. So a Mind Map can also be an Idea Map, but an Idea Map is rarely a Mind Map in the strictest sense of the Mind Map laws.

Saline Leadership Institute (SLI) Idea Mapping or Mind Mapping Workshop 1I have had the privilege to teach an annual Idea Mapping Workshop for the Saline Leadership Institute (SLI) for the last 12 years.  Regardless of the industry these leaders come from, the Idea Mapping tool continues to help leaders return to their businesses and lives more productive, more creative and more organized.

One of the challenges for leaders at every level of the organization is how they can get their arms around an overwhelming amount of information, make sense out of it, and then take the appropriate actions. Professionals are often immobilized at the thought of tackling major tasks.  An idea map can become an image that houses all the necessary data on one piece of paper. This enables the brain to see connections between ideas that would not be apparent in a linear document. Once the map is created, you can step back and “think about your thinking.”

Saline Leadership Institute was founded in 1998 in Saline, Michigan by Gretchen Driskell, Bill Lavery and Dan Stotz, … read more about SLI.

Lili Celebrates her birthday during the Jordan Idea Mapping Workshop

Idea Map of Lili's Birthday Card

The first Idea Mapping Workshop held in Jordan was in February 2010.  It was so successful that I went back in May for round two. Here are a few more photos from that second class.

The second day of class was Lili Krause’s birthday. Her co-workers brought in a cake and gave her this birthday card shown on the left in the form of an Idea Map. Already putting their new skills to work creatively!

The first photo features Lili’s co-workers Iyad Khaldi, (Lili), Anne Venus, and Safwan Nazer from GTZ.

This workshop was sponsored by Safa Hijazeen and his Forward Training team. If you want to see a fabulous 3-minute YouTube video featuring participants from the first class in Jordan, click here and then play the video in the lower left part of the screen.

Registration is now open for the next Idea Mapping Workshop in Amman, Jordan which will be held October 10-11, 2010.  Contact Forward Training if you have any questions.

Jason Lentz - Jujitsu Idea Map

Jacob Fouts - LinkedIn.com Idea MapIdea Mapping helps two more college students. The first posting for this Spring’s Idea Mapping Experiment at Luther College was May 19 where there is more background. Now get ready for part 4!

Dr. Tim Schweizer spent one 60-minute class teaching them the concepts and guidelines of Idea Mapping. They read chapters 2-5 of the Idea Mapping book, and then spent a second 60-minute class practicing and applying their new skills.

Their assignment was to create an idea map that would be relevant to them either personally, professionally, or academically. He gave them several topic suggestions and allowed for either hand drawn or computer generated maps.

Above you will find Idea Maps #243 & #244. The top one was created by Jason Lentz to report on the history, basics, origin, etc about Jujitsu. The second one is from Jacob Fouts. This map lays out the various components to building a LinkedIn Profile. Jacob’s personal thoughts about Idea Mapping were, “I think what makes idea mapping an easy concept to learn is that this method was developed to correlate with how the brain works, making this technique seem more natural to implement.” Thank you both for sharing these!

Old Montreal

Juggling Baseline

Montreal-Notre-Dame

On August 19-20, 2010 the Idea Mapping Workshop will be held in Montreal, Quebec for the first time. The instructor will be Jamie Nast, author of Idea Mapping. The class will be taught in English, but Britta Heintzen (who will be participating in the workshop) will be available to translate into French if clarification is needed.

Idea Mapping has a rich foundation in Mind Mapping, and can be defined in this way:

“An idea map is a powerful visual thinking tool that enhances memory, note-taking skills, thought organization, planning, creativity and communication. It uses color, key words, lines and images to connect thoughts associatively. Idea Maps are the natural expression of the way the brain processes information associatively.”

For those who are considering becoming a CIMI (Certified Idea Mapping Instructor), this 2-day workshop is a prerequisite. I hope you can join us for this unusual and fun learning experience. View the workshop abstract or register for the class.

Creating a Mind Map or Idea Map Book Summary 1

Tala with Rana - Immediate Use of Idea Mapping

I am so proud of this most recent group of Idea Mappers from Jordan, so I will occasionally be sharing photos from this workshop. The top picture is from an activity where participants create an idea map of a chapter from a book of their choice. Left to right is Hussam Shadid, Lamia Asmar, Nadia Ayesh-Rajab, Nisreen Abu Salim, Jumana Zoghmout and Tawfiq Al Farkh. Five out of these six work for Zain, one of the largest and most innovative cell phone companies in the world.

In the bottom photo are Tala Qarrain (standing) and Rana El Far. I visited their office the day after the workshop and they showed me how they were using their new Idea Mapping skills for their job! More postings from this workshop are from May 10 and May 27.

This workshop was sponsored by Safa Hijazeen and his Forward Training team. If you want to see a fabulous 3-minute YouTube video featuring the first class in Jordan, click here and then play the video in the lower left part of the screen.

The PMP (Project Management Professional) Certification is one of the most valued credentials in project management. The PMP credential assures an organization that employees are committed to project management. According to a 2005 article I found on the PMI (Project Management Institute) website:

“PMI’s (Project Management Institute) PMP credential is considered by many as the “gold standard” of global project management certification. This credential, which is ISO 9001: 2000 compliant, connotes the holder as one who has demonstrated the knowledge, experience and leadership skills required to competently practice project management. During 2005, PMI has experienced an extraordinary increase in the number of practitioners taking the PMP examination, resulting in 86,925 PMPs being certified during this 12 month period…”

Back to School

Benefits of Mind Mapping and Idea Mapping for Studying

If there is one common reaction that most Idea Mapping Workshop participants say in response to the course it is this:

“I wish I had learned Idea Mapping when I was in school. It would really have helped my grades and my ability to study!”

Although it is NEVER too late to learn, my heart breaks for today’s students struggling to learn volumes of information in the same old-fashioned non-brain friendly way. Idea Mapping (and the other learning and memory skills taught in this class) could provide many benefits to students as outlined in the Idea Map above.

Therefore I have scheduled a 2-day workshop for August 11-12, 2010 in Livonia, Michigan to be able to catch any students before the school year starts or college students head back to school. This class will have a mix of business professionals and students. For the first time students will be able to attend the Idea Mapping Workshop for 50% off. Review the course abstract and register today!

Danielle Meirick - Idea Map of Her Genetics Notes

Christina Gednalske - Idea Map of Her Future

The Spring 2010 semester’s Idea Mapping experiment at Luther College has an exciting new twist.  Tim Schweizer’s fall 2009 students  used idea mapping to summarize a book of their choice. (You can search on Tim’s name and find many of these examples including some of his own.) This time around the assignment was completely different.

Dr. Schweizer spent one 60-minute class teaching them the concepts and guidelines of Idea Mapping.

Idea Maps #238 & #239 – above you will find two very different and unusual maps. The top one was created by Danielle Meirick.  This idea map comes from her studies on genetics. The second one is from Christina Gednalske to help her think about her future including her education, travels, career, and interests. Thank you both for sharing these!
