warren-arbuckles-book

Warren Arbuckle’s Business Mapping is the title of Warren’s book that was published in Japan in the Spring of 2008. We were introduced last year by our dear mutual friend, Vanda North. Ironically my Idea Mapping book in Japanese was paired with his for a while on amazon.jp.

Warren has lived in Tokyo for 25 years and has a consulting and training business there focusing on business innovation and project management. His book is based on his problem solving course, Solutions. He’s combined mind mapping with other business skills such as project management, innovation and meetings. His Project Mapping course has just been approved by the Project Management Institute which means that certified PMPs (Project Management Professionals) can receive credit towards re-certification. Warren is currently writing a book on project management based on his course which he hopes to publish in both English and Japanese.

Frank Medlar’s December 16, 2008 idea mapping example was the most popular 2008 posting since I start the new version of this blog in September 2008. Today I’m sharing another one of Frank’s maps that was also featured in the December 2008 Mindjet Newsletter.

Frank Medlar is the Director of Workplace Learning and Career Development at a Boston-area college. I met him personally when he attended my Idea Mapping Workshop in August of this year. He is also in the process of becoming a Certified Idea Mapping Instructor (CIMI). Below is the description of this idea map.

“This map helped me plan a new hires orientation redesign effort. The redesign will help us shorten the time it takes for staff to perform at their fullest, increase employee retention, and save both time and money (among many benefits). It’s got all the elements of the strategic plan and purpose together on one page. It lets me track progress on key components and focus on what still needs to be done. Before mapping this out, I struggled with bringing all the elements of the redesign into a coherent whole and moving them forward in concert. With the map, I feel much more confident about the plan. I am making steady progress, and I always have a dashboard to show my boss how the project is going.”

This is a collapsed version of this map. Double click on the idea map for a clear view of this jpg file. If you would like to have a clear pdf version click here or if you would like a copy of the full map, you can request a copy from me at info(at)ideamappingsuccess(dot)com or email Frank at info(at)strengthspath(dot)org.

This map was featured in my December 2008 column of the Mindjet Monthly Newsletter.

I first featured idea maps from Melinda Dang on December 11, 2008 and then again on December 13, 2008. She is in the 11th grade and is the daughter of Steve Dang who was one of my Boeing workshop participants in October. If she let’s me I’m going to follow her progress right on into college!

Melinda is now creating Idea Maps to study for the vocabulary portion of the SAT Test. She has shared 5 maps addressing the following words: Didactic, Conjecture, Abase, Adroit, Adulate, Austere, and Echelon. What I think is fascinating is watching her maps take quite a change by the time she gets to the Abase & Adroit maps. It’s as if she’s getting more comfortable and all of a sudden an explosion of color and imagery take over.

Today she has another Physics test, and she has prepared by creating idea maps of the material. I’ll let you know how she does. No pressure Melinda!

Frank Medlar is the Director of Workplace Learning and Career Development for a Boston area college. We met in August 2008 when he attended a 2-day public Idea Mapping Workshop.

Today (and for the rest of the month) one of his idea maps is featured in my column in the monthly Mindjet Newsletter. So I thought I would share another one of his maps in addition to the one in the newsletter. This is a fun idea map that blends Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People with some of the principles of David Allen’s Getting Things Done. Each branch includes a note that further explains the GTD principle and references the page in the GTD book. You can’t see this in the jpg format here. If you would like the MindManager file, email me at info(at)ideamappingsuccess(dot)com and I’ll send it to you.

Frank has completed his first prerequisite and is planning to become a Certified Idea Mapping Instructor.

Here are two more idea maps from Melinda Dang as she studied for her AP Physics class. For full details see the previous post.

I taught two Idea Mapping Workshops at Boeing in Seattle October 27-30, 2008. In a previous posting about these workshops, I mentioned that one of the participants (Steve Dang) went home and taught idea mapping to his daughter who was struggling with AP Physics. A couple weeks after the workshops I received a note from Steve’s daughter Melinda saying that idea mapping had helped her in physics. She promised to send along her examples. So here are the first few and her story thus far.

Melinda is in 11th grade and took on the challenge of AP Physics with no previous physics or calculus background. Before her dad introduced her to Idea Mapping she was getting about 40-50% (F). This came despite her efforts to study tediously for 6 hours at a time. So she changed her method.

After her introduction to this tool she would read a chapter and then make her map. Her current grade has already improved to a 76% in a very short few weeks ( and hopes to continue to see improvement). Melinda thinks the progress came from mapping, learning associations between word problems and concepts, and just a lot more studying on my part.

Since she was able to improve and struggle through AP Physics, Melinda was also able to overcome her weaknesses in math. She stated, “Pre-calculus to me now is very simple, it’s strange how Physics indirectly helped my math, I would’ve never thought of it that way.”

Her first map topic was “Fluids”, and the second map above is the back side of the paper on that same chapter. The third example looks like it has something to do with the volume and bouyancy of a balloon. I’ll share a couple more of hers in the next posting. She has agreed to occasionally share more examples including studying for vocabulary for SATs.

Mindjet is going to have a booth at the SaaS World Conference & Expo in Tokyo beginning tomorrow and running through December 11, 2008. Since the newly translated Idea Mapping book in Japanese does not include a trial version of MindManager, this is your opportunity to stop by their booth and get a personal demo from Florence, Kenji or Teiji!

Here are a few more photos from OTPP. The first two show the newly invented game called “Nerf Gun Baseball”. Nerf disks are shot from the toy gun and the hitter attempts to swat them with one of the sticks from the set of devil’s sticks. Although a difficult challenge, there was some success!
