When the Idea Mapping Book was published by Wiley the Idea Maps included in the book were printed in black & white much to my disappointment. So I’ve slowly been featuring some of those maps in color on my blog. This one was created by Certified Idea Mapping Instructor Liza Seiner.
I met Liza in 2004 when she still had a law practice (she since decided to close it). She used idea maps for her clients who needed estate planning services. The idea maps she used with her clients helped her organize her own thinking, refreshed her memory on document terms, helped her prepare for client meetings and acted as the meeting agenda. Using the idea map also cut the meeting time by 30%. Clients appreciated and enjoyed the process.
Liza has share many maps in this blog and on her own blog as well. She is a gifted artist and you will see that in her work. Search on “Liza Seiner” or see some of these examples: A Business Card to Remember, A Celebration of Life and Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits.
If you have been following my postings about Dr. Tim Schweizer and his management students at Luther College, you will enjoy 4 more examples from his Fall 2011 class. I have been following Tim’s work since October 2009 — shortly after he attended one of my Idea Mapping Workshops.
Tim has developed a solid process to successfully teach Idea Mapping to his students. Tim takes the first two class periods to teach Idea Mapping to his students.
The first idea mapping example was created by Joel Gasway to study for his sociology class. The second example is from Caroline Mares on the topic of her future. Next we have Devin Gilbertson who used Idea Mapping to study for his chemistry class. The final example is from Eric Johnson who used Idea Mapping to plan for his military career. The January 6, 2012 posting has more examples from this class of students.
Thank you Dr. Schweizer’s Luther College students Joel Gasway, Caroline Mares, Devin Gilbertson, and Eric Johnson for sharing your idea maps.
Once again I (Jamie Nast) will be teaching my 2-day Idea Mapping Workshop. This course is open to the public and I will have 2 college students and at least one high school senior joining the adults for the class. Registration is still open with 5 seats remaining. I look forward to having you join me for this exciting time of fun and learning. See you there!
The 2012 Visual Thinking Conference is for anyone focused on visual approaches to thinking and communication. So whether you are a business leader giving presentations, a marketing manager designing websites and materials, or a grade school teacher looking for new ways to reach students, no other event offers you more of today’s solutions… and tomorrow’s vision.
The keynotes include:
Cliff Atkinson, Karl Gude and myself…along with many other talented presenters that will be providing breakout sessions. Many of the speakers run workshops and conferences all over the globe. Their sessions often individually cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars. The fee for the entire day with this great line up is only $100 (and that includes a continental breakfast and box lunch)! There are even special rates for K-12 teachers ($50) and K-12 students ($25).
Registration information, location, times and schedules can be found at the conference website.
On January 9, 2012 I wrote a posting about a new book written by my literary agent — Jodie Rhodes.
Jodie now has a new website for this book at jodierhodesconfessions.com. A unique attribute of this book is that all money generated by the sales of this memoir will be donated to The Jodie Rhodes Literary Book Awards. Winners of the award will have their books featured on both Barnes & Noble and Amazon, and distributed by Ingram and Baker & Taylor to bookstores all over the country. You will find submission guidelines in the last chapter of her book.
Confessions was just published in the fall of 2011. This memoir is not her story about becoming a literary agent. In fact, you won’t come across that until the end of the book. As Jodie states, “Instead, you will read the story of a person who lived a life that could only be written as a confession.”
Kirkus Review
“Well known literary agent Jodie Rhodes’ eye-opening memoir combines the personal and professional. She grew up in an era when women succeeded in marriage, not business. But her parents’ toxic relationship, a family legacy of divorce, plus her burning desire to write, all sent Rhodes the other way. Precocious, tenacious and pretty, she charged into the world of 1960s advertising at the age of 20 and fairly conquered it. Rhodes was catnip for men and left a trail of broken hearts and defeated suitors. She moved on and up like a cyclone, becoming a media buyer and creative director in San Francisco and later promoted to VP Media Director of N.W Ayer in Los Angeles but smarts and drive couldn’t save her from personal tragedies. A business primer with detailed strategies of winning marketing gambits, and a romance memoir with all the confessions readers savor, with narrative high points.”
YouTube Direkt2012 Idea Mapping Workshop in Poland
I just returned from teaching Idea Mapping in Warsaw, Poland for a program called EUROREG — an Academy of Evaluation which is financed and sponsored by the Polish Ministry of Regional Development and the European Union.
I am the first presenter each year for this 9-month program where participants meet every other Fri/Sat for a total of 11 hours per weekend. You can see photos and read more about previous years in my 2010 post, 2009 post and 2008 post.
This year we were missing Dr. Karol Olejniczak who is an Assistant Professor at the University of Warsaw. He is the original person who invited me to teach when this program started in 2008. Also missing this year was Prof. Gregory Gorzelak. My tradition of bringing him something fun (see photos from previous years) will have to wait until next year.
Despite missing these two individuals, Pawel and I managed just fine and it was another excellent workshop. This 1:21 YouTube video features photos from this event. Enjoy!
I was recently helping a high school student study for his Spanish exam in a way that better matches his visual learning style. I think most students would agree that their boring linear notes are difficult study tools. So why not try something different.
Today’s example is not chapter notes from a Spanish book. This is a template that provides an example of a possible approach to creating an idea map and some items you may want to include in your map. Four of the branches in this map are vocabulary words: Globos, Libro, Reloj, and Biblia. It’s always important to include a picture of the word. In this template I suggested adding tenses and plural versions of the words on the sub-branches along with anything else you may need to know.
The other two main branches are sentences. The one I expanded upon the most was “My name is John.” I started with the English sentence and then translated it into Spanish. I shared similar sentences for “Your name is John” and “Their names are John.” I also added symbols. The eye means “my or me”, the “U” means “you”, and the 3-person icon means “they or their.” For the other sentence I started with the Spanish sentence that means “Can I have a glass of water?” Some may prefer putting the Spanish sentences on the main branch like I did with the vocabulary words.
Lots of other imaginative additions could be made to this I’m sure. BTW – If any of these words or phrases are off a bit…I only speak a very little bit of Spanish and pulled these translations off the internet. If anyone would like the MindManager version of this template, just drop me a note.
I first introduced you to Kris Mavin and the West Highland Christian Academy Idea Mapping experiment in my Oct. 17, 2011 posting. Kris has taught Idea Mapping to his students and we are tracking their progress. This Animoto video features Kris’s second Idea Mapping assignment for his students which was to map the two trees found in Gen. 2 and Rev. 22:2. Enjoy!
I used MindManager software to create this idea map which is an advertisement for Alternative Tan salon owner Kim Matyaszek. It summarizes much of the information on her website and gives potential clients a quick view of all the information they need to begin their tanning experience. Additional photos can be found on the Alternative Tan Facebook page.
For the spray tans Kim uses the Norvell product line and she personally does all the sprays by hand (full body and partial). The tanning color is tailored to your skin tone and preference. Not the mystic booth!
Alternative Tan is located in Canton, Michigan in the Golden Gate Shopping Center on Lilley Road just south of Joy Road. For salon hours it is always best to check her website as they can change with the seasons. Kim is currently running some nice specials, so grab them while they last and beat the winter blues!
The purpose of this blog is to share idea mapping examples and related learning from my Idea Mapping, Memory, Speed Reading, and Certification Workshops. This blog is dedicated to my Certified Idea Mapping Instructors, my clients, Mind Mapping and Idea Mapping practitioners around the globe.
