An Idea Mapping Success Blogs Weblog
Abraham Paniagua is from the Dominican Republic and today he shares his very first Idea Map. The Idea Map and his blog are both in Spanish, but he explains the map in English below:
“First I thought about my life and everything that has to do with it. I thought of my Studies (1:00pm) which I’m currently doing a Bachelors degree in FLET college, and I’m studying Theology (that’s why I put THEOS in Greek). But then I also want to do my Masters, but dunno in which place yet, but I wanna do it at Divinity.
Then I thought of friendships, at 7:00, which starts with all the adults I have in my life, including my family (that’s why I made the relationship with the arrow). Then I thought of the brothers and sisters at my church, those GOOD brothers and those BAD brothers (or those who are not really close to me). But then I thought about friendship with ENEMIES and FAMILY.
3rd branch is WORK, at 5:00, which is a DAILY thing (branch at 3:00 is called “DAILY”). I work at CCL, a Christian school where I teach COMPUTER CLASSES and CIVICS (or ETHICS). But then I have the MINISTRIES of my church which are formed by the ministry of SOUND, the YOUTH GROUP, in SMALL GROUPS, and the PREACHING ministry which is done with my TESTIMONY and preaching in the TOWNS of my country.
4th branch is PARTNER or love life. It will be perfect for me, and I’ll have it at the time of God (I’m currently single). 5th branch is GOD. I can serve him because of CHRIST and his death at the CROSS, which cleans all my SINS. But I also serve God through my PERSONAL DEVOTION and my PUBLIC DEVOTION to him. Which can be done inside the CHURCH, where I also serve him.
Last branch is the DAILY branch at 3:00. PROBLEMS appear DAILY, with or without solutions, but they still appear. When I find a soultion it makes me HAPPY, when I don’t it makes me mad. And on a daily basis OPORTUNITIES appear, different kinds of opportunities.
First Idea Map, got some errors (2 words, instead of 1) and need more practice, but i LOVE IT, amazing…just amazing! can’t wait to read the whole book and be a certified teacher in the future!”
Abraham – Nothing wrong with using more than one word per branch! Sometimes one word just isn’t enough! Thanks a million for sharing your first Idea Map with us, and good luck on your studies.

Happy New Year! View this free 1-hour webinar that will introduce you to the concept and uses of Idea Mapping. This webinar was originally produced by the Project Management Bookstore in August of 2009. When the registration opened the 1,500 slots were filled in under 2 hours. Now you can attend this for free. PMPs can earn 1 PDU. To earn 15 PDUs under category 4, attend one of Jamie Nast’s full 2-day public workshops.
As a result of some lengthy discussions with the participants of my December 7-8, 2009 public Idea Mapping Workshop in Florida, I have a new Facebook page. So many students are either struggling with learning and retaining information for their studies OR they think studying is just plain boring. Idea Mapping and mind mapping are still relatively unknown tools. For some teachers who encourage clustering or webbing (less sophisticated graphical tool), this technique rarely is used outside of Language Arts.
This new page is specifically dedicated to high school students who are learning to use idea mapping in their studies and life. The examples will range from studying for the SAT Test, every subject in high school, planning parties (first example above), and “to do” maps (second example above). I will also be sharing (and encouraging students to share with each other) learning strategies, memory techniques, and other studies skills. I am officially inviting all high school students to share their examples and comments with me and each other. Let’s improve those grades!
P.S. For those of you who have been to my regular Facebook page it can be a little confusing with me having two pages. On the more business-focused wall I’m in pink with colored markers. On the high school wall I’m in blue.
In December I taught a 2-day public Idea Mapping Workshop in Palm Beach, Florida (see photos here). One of the participants was Tracey Lyon who is a Senior Instructional Designer at Vangent, Inc. The day before Christmas I received a Christmas card from her. Here you can see the front and back sides of her card. Thought you would enjoy seeing this unique use of idea mapping.
Enjoy the upcoming New Year’s celebration!
Merry Christmas to everyone. I hope you enjoy special times with family and friends during this season.
Two weeks ago 12 of us gathered for an Idea Mapping Workshop in Palm Beach, Florida. For some Certified Idea Mapping Instructors (Larisa Brigevich, Joe Kovach, Kaizad Irani, Liza Seiner and Dave Gunby) it was a time of review and re-connection. For others it was a whole new experience. For all it was a great time of fun and learning. We started our time together in the tradition of gathering the Sunday night before class for introductions for the new participants and a time of catching up for the rest of us. Even Vanda North (who happened to be in town) was able to join us. It makes going into the workshop the following day that much more enjoyable.
The next four photos show some of the sharing of idea maps that occurs during each of the idea mapping activities. This enables participants to see how uniquely they each capture different and similar information using this tool — therefore stretching their learning. I’ll follow-up with more photos in future postings.
It was truly an amazing time. Richard Israel popped up from Miami on December 9th. If you want to join in on the fun, their are several public Idea Mapping Workshops scheduled for 2010.

For those of you in the Idea Mapping and Mind Mapping worlds, the names Vanda North and Richard Israel are probably familiar to you. They joined forces and have written a new book titled “Mind Chi” published by Wiley — the same publisher who published Idea Mapping.
Here’s a brief description of the book: “When your energy diminishes you feel ineffective and weary. Just as Tai Chi has been used for centuries to balance body and mind; Mind Chi will give you a daily routine and simple exercises to increase your mental energy. Before you know it you will have recharged your diminished brain energy, all you need to do is commit yourself to doing Mind Chi for 8 minutes a day.”
You can pre-order the book in the USA. It is scheduled for released here in February 2010. For more information visit the Mind Chi website at http://mindchi.com.
Looking for that perfect gift for a special person in your life? Do you have someone in your life who is overwhelmed with information, their job, managing projects, organizing their thinking, planning, studying, remembering, developing and delivering presentations, or generally bored with how they take notes in meetings or in classes. Do you know anyone who could use some help in communicating in a more visual, interesting, and memorable way?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, the Idea Mapping book might be a gift you should consider purchasing from Amazon. A companion gift idea is this custom-designed Idea Mapping Kit complete with a set of beautiful Staedler Markers, a 4-color pen, and more! Normally this kit sells for $99 plus shipping. From now until the end of the December 31, 2009 the Idea Mapping Kits will be discounted to $79 plus shipping as long as the purchase is within the USA. When you purchase the kit, you will be prompted to pay the $99, but the Idea Mapping team will follow-up by reimbursing you the $20 discount.
Merry Christmas and Happy Mapping!

These Idea Maps are the 13th and 14th examples in this year’s experiment (initiated by Dr. Tim Schweizer) following students at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. The October 23, 2008 posting first introduced this series and and the October 28, 2009 post puts this experiment in context. Read those postings for background.
Today’s idea mapping examples come from students Elisa Vasquez (top) and Paige Silberhorn who both provided their reflections on the book Maverick by Ricardo Semler in the form of an idea map.
Thank you to Elisa and Paige for sharing your examples.
